#1045 Cannot log in to the MySQL server!?

I've just downloaded MySQL via XAMPP and I'm trying to use PHPMyAdmin to create a database.
Whilst I have managed to use my username and password to get onto MySQL I can't use them to access PHPMyAdmin for some reason, and it comes up with the error: #1045 Cannot log in to the MySQL server.
Can someone help?

No I didn't, it didn't give me the chance, it just installed. I have had to go into the config.inc.php file and the cds.php file in the \phpmyadmin / \htdocs\bin folder and try and set them from there.

Don't hard code the passwords in config file. You can leave them empty and enter on prompt. I believe the default user/passwords are "root"/"" (no password)

See this as it should resolve the 1045 error:

I left the user and password fields blank, but I put in a MySecretPassword field which let me into MySQL but not phpmyadmin for some reason. Without this I can't even get into MySQL.

That's for Linux and I'm on Windows I'm afraid. He does say on Windows he modified the content of his config file though so it seems as though I am on the right track.
