How to renew expired domain elsewhere

Hi, folks:

A friend doesn't like his hosting company, which has him on an old server with old software, and wants money to move him to one of the new servers with new software that new folks are automatically placed on. He doesn't like that, nor the customer support.

His domain name expired three days ago:

Record last updated on 21-Jul-2005.
Record expires on 23-Jul-2006.
Record created on 23-Jul-2003.

He's like to register is elsewhere so that he can place it on a better host. (The better host will throw in the domain name for free forever.)

But if you check the domain name availability, you're told it's in use. Is there a grace period? How's he get around it? He's had the domain name for three years. I'd be grateful for some advice!

When you are in redemption period, you can't renew elsewhere. First of all, your friend would have to renew it's domain there and then change for another hosting company for his domain name.

But just be aware that renewing a domain while it's in redeption period (during 30 days after the expiration) cost a lot more than renewing the domain on time.

If you need any help, I'm here.
