Finding out a website's web host

Hi-
I'm trying to determine where a website is hosted because my boss isn't very organized and has lost that paperwork for that particular client. What's the best way to go about this? I've tried www.whois.com but am getting mixed up between the Nameserver host and the Current registrant (different companies named for each). Which should I be paying attention to? (also a brief explanation of each would be appreciated for future reference). Thanks for any advice.

www.ae-advisors.com

I actually need to do it for a whole list of websites- I just got a new system at work and tried to switch over the website accounts to the new system but don't have the passwords, etc because many of them were created before I was with the company- so any explanation of the route you'd take to find this out would be appreciated. (Ibasically need to know what web hosts I need to contact to get the lost info)

for that site I get this:

Quote:
Domain servers in listed order:

NS1.CARPATHIAHOST.NET 66.117.44.8
NS2.CARPATHIAHOST.NET 66.117.45.8
http://www.carpathiahost.net/

That's what I look at, but I'm not a professional in the hosting business and there may be a better way to do it.

That is true, Juggo....I just find it odd that someone who is supposedly in the web biz wouldn't know how to find out the host......

I worked for a guy that claimed to do web design and provide hosting, though when I got involved in the projects I realized he only knew frontpage and the built in FTP for the program... he had never heard of cPanel or dealing with MySQL or setting up email addresses, etc.

It doesn't surprise me that people don't understand all aspects... or keep solid records. And as an employee of someone who doesn't keep up with things you may have to look up information that you had never delt with before.

I'm trying to give people the benefit of the doubt.

Whois.sc/*domain*
In the *domain* bit we will use this forum as an example.

www.whois.sc/v7n.com

And looking on there you can find IP Address, and IP Location.
IP Location helps a lot, as you can see - "IP Location: United States - California - Los Angeles - Serverbeach" Severbeach is V7's dedicated host.

However, Name Servers help as well, as you can see V7's NS's are:
NS1.D7HOST.COM
And NS2.D7HOST.COM

So that's pretty simple, IP Location, and Name Servers.

But, in some cases, the above will not tell you the host, and that's where further research comes into hand, but I'm not going to go in depth.

As stated: The IP address of the Server which the DNS resolves to will be the owned by the host of the website.
