Directory vs Subdomain

Can anyone explain the benefits of dividing web site sections up into subdomains (subject.domain.com) instead of directories (domains.com/subject).

I'm going to do some sites that have some major sections which, in some ways, I want to look and act as separate web sites - but I do want them all tied together. So I can see using subdomains, each with their own index files, and have one mega-home-page at the root.

But I could do this same thing with directories, and have never quite figured out why/when the subdomain is preferred. Any ideas or experiences appreciated. - DPAM

Subdomains are usually used to seperate out parts of a site that don't go together. Like, www.v7inc.com for hosting. design.v7inc.com for web design. And nudes.v7inc.com for my porno collection. I guess folders would work, but it feels right to give each their own subdomain.

Subdomains are also better than folders for SEO purposes. They are treated as seperate domains.

Directory vs Subdomain

DPAM,

I thought of the same thing as well and also thought they just looked like better URLs. But right now, I'm using them to get a better idea of my real site statistics. My main stats gives me an excess of hits because it counts all my entries to the admin panel and so on. So instead of logging on to the main stats, I log on to the subdomain stats. That way i get a more exact figure on who's visiting what.

Also, at my workplace, it gives the site more of a "departmental" splitting.. so i'd give my media department the URL media.company.com that way your site reflects the professionalism of your company..

Hope that helps!
Nadz

i agree w/ JS - e.g: a web designers site: templates.webdesign.com - custom.webdesign.com ECT....

Here's a question along the same line, then. Is there a way to do that with a forum? Like have whatever.domain.com & whynot.domain.com & whocares.domain.com all be 1 forum with 1 login, but on different pages?

JS... look at your site stats and see how many people actually tried to hit nudes.v7inc.com i'm very curious how many 404 errors were sent for that one!

you mean setting up the subdomain to redirect to one subfolder?

[code:1:6b0b490faf]whatever.domain.com -----> www.domain.com/forum
whynot.domain.com -------> www.domain.com/forum
whocares.domain.com -----> www.domain.com/forum[/code:1:6b0b490faf]

they're different domains but point to same folder. you just have to setup the redirection in the CPANEL or just have a redirection script on each index page but yea it's very possible
