I am no longer with Linode, I switched to Vultr because I needed DDoS protection. But I can say that the uptime was near 100% with Linode and I never had any High CPU load during the time I was with them.

actually we are interested in Ddos protection as well

we have been hit by data scrapers recently and were almost down

you said vultr - did the cost go up when you switch to it?

Yes the price is higher but you have more space and it's $10/month for the DDoS protection.

Linode, 2GB RAM VPS, 1 CPU, 24GB SSD storage = $10/month.

Vultr, 2GB RAM VPS, 2 CPU, 45GB SSD storage = $20/month + $10/month for DDOS protection.

Yes it was a beta test feature over a year ago but now it's fully functional as far as I know. I don't know if it's protecting from layers 1 through 7 tho, it depends on what type of attack you were suffering. I can say that it's a good protection for a website but I cannot say for UDP applications that is hard to mitigate.

There is also proven complete (layers 1 through 7) DDoS protection for VPS around like the one from hudsonvalleyhost but it's only available in Buffalo, NY. I've tested it for a Teamspeak server that use UDP packets and it did mitigate the attacks succesfully.

thanks looks like you really know the stuff you are talking about

maybe I will give vultr a shot maybe not but at least I know linode is not bad and could be on my list of hosting companies to consider.

now as I have been using linode for over a month I can say it is OK.

only one thing bothers me - their backup system CANNOT handle large number of files. our full page cache system keeps 100G worth of 200kb files and their $5 backup service keeps failing. Linode engineers are telling us to limit number of files but we want to have full page cache for our magento store.

so I ended up with custom built backup that is using automysqlbackup.

apart from that they are fine.

We've used Linode. Generally good, although there are some planned outages occasionally (brief). Restoring is a bit of a pain.

I read more good reviews about Linode on this post

http://forumweb.hosting/13126-vultr-vs-ovh-vs-ramnode-vs-linode-vs-digitalocean.html

I never used both Linode or aws but from my comparisons on pricing and features then Linode is better than aws.

In other words, you can try soyoustart or scaleways, these providers are offering good specs with low pricing.

pain is not the right word for - it is a nightmare at least it was for us

we had a site crash and we had to restore from a backup.

first restore took 14hours (!!!) and we lost a folder or two full of files. They said that backup was not OK because of a large number of files in the folders.

we tried a second time and it was OK. took another 12hours.

virtualization comes at a cost. I wish a bare metal server costs the same as the cloud one does.
