expired domain but i can't buy it yet

Hi Guys,

I'm wondering somebody out there has any ideas on why I can't buy a domain name that expired with its current owners on 1 Feb 2004?

The simple reason is, i have a client who used this company to design a website for him, (of course they registered the domain in their name not his) then they stopped updating the site, providing monthly statements, reports etc. So he cancelled it and asked me to do a new one, under a new domain.

He wants to get his old domain back, as he's used it in a lot of previous advertising, and i've spent 4 days trying to buy it but it keeps showing up as taken, yet in the whois report showing pending renewal.

Anybody any ideas?

Thanks

Rob

I believe it is held for 30 days for the owner to claim it. It may be 60 you should look up on internic if it is a .com.

There's a six letter .com domain name registered with Network Solutions which my manager wants us to have. It was registered by someone else, but they have not renewed it. The WhoIs information states:

"Record expires on 12-Jan-2004.
Record created on 12-Jan-2002."

So it will be around March or April when this domain name become available for me to register?

Thank you.

Update

Checked internic.com as suggested by someone above.

Updated Date: 12-jan-2004
Creation Date: 12-jan-2002
Expiration Date: 12-jan-2005

?

So why does the whois at NetSol say it hasn't been renewed? Strange... who is more accurate internic or netsol?

Hi Guys,

It looks like your right about the holding period, i'm led to believe that its normally a 30 day period for .co.uk domains.

Its not really to much of a problem for me, unless you take into account the guy who wants the domain, who's on the phone every day asking if i've managed to get it yet!

With the variance of opinion between whois and netsol, could it be something to do with the update time? Unless i'm mistaken most domains take about 24 hours to be shown as taken, so maybe these two companies update their info at different times? I could be talking a load of rubbish, but it could be feasable.

Network Solutions has a tendency to hold the domain even longer to prevent their customer from going to another registrar who is cheaper to re-register the domain name.
