Are you looking for a vps or dedicated server ? If your site contains heavy databases I suggest you get ssd based vps or dedicated servers

If your website having heavy database than its better if you purchase couple of VPS and configure it as a cluster for your website to balance the load and avoid downtime. In Dedicated server cost you can easily purchase a couple of SSD VPS. Let me know, if you required any help.

What is your current resource usage?
webspace used for files, databases and emails? Bandwidth, current CPU and RAM usage?
Are you looking for linux or windows hosting?

If you provide more information, other users will be able to give you better advice and recommendations.

My thought is that you're going to need to be much more specific to get valid recommendations.

How big are your databases? How many of them are there? Saying they're "heavy" is meaningless.

What does "without slowing it down" even mean?

If you are exceed these limits at the moment, then the following will meet your needs

Centos 7
Xeon E3
8 GB RAM
1 x 128GB SSD or 2 x 128GB SSD (RAID 1 for safety)

Do you have a managed or unmanaged VPS at the moment?

How can you know this will meet Evelyn's needs?

They've posted nothing about their actual usage.

Perhaps Evelyn can provide more information regarding the actual usage of the site(s) she is hosting and then realistic recommendations can be made.

Maybe Evelyn could clarify what the current load level is on the VPS, what the actual server specs and load are looking like (output from things like lscpu, vmstat, iostat, queries per second, # web server connection, # slow queries, db size, are indexes used, etc)...

After I tested many shared servers, I ended up with Cloudways (VPS). It's fast, affordable and stable. I believe they provide a testing period so that you install a copy of your website there and test it.

Sometimes it's not about what server to use, its but also about optimizing the performance of your website. I say this because I am a website speed addict. There are cache plugins/modules for front side and server side that you should buy to optimize further. Front side caches in the user's browser. Server-side caches in the server. Buy the best one not an affordable plugin (read reviews and then decide).

Also, if you have overloaded your website with plugins, then try to disable them one by one while testing performance with 'Pingdom Speed Test' (google it). Then decide which ones are not necessary. This test will show you how many files are loaded and how long they take.

Cloudways is software that runs on your choice of cloud provider. You still have to choose the underlying cloud that is right for you.

But Parisf is absolutely correct in that the website software (or lack thereof) itself is the key factor in determining how fast your website will actually be.

Without good hosting, your site can not be fast.

But also, without an optimized website, no amount of good hosting will make your site fast. The best hosting platform in the world can't fix poor design/code.
