You can get free that works just as well as a paid program
I use LiveHelp by Crafty Syntax and it does all I need and then some.

Do you want it to be managed (ie as in the company you buy off will pay people to go on the computer an answer questions, or wil you be hiring all the live chatters?)

If you are just goign to talk to them yourself, or with your own staff then go for a free one. But if you don't want to manage the staff yourself try a paid or professional one

geldirectory is web crap
it always depend on your requirement and what your site is offering, if its a free site and giving away free information then you can go for free chat and if its paid one then to maintain the quality of site you can go for paid chat.

You may just install the free one and see if it is good enough. if free one satisfies your needs, why waste your money??

There are some really good free versions such as Shine Live Help. You can install and run them yourself plus the benefits of open source. Shine also integrates with SugarCRM. I like the idea of supporting open source projects.
