That depends...

However, where that's the case then usually the reason (on a like-for-like basis) is to cover for exchange rate fluctuations. At the moment anything in USD is cheap for most (anyone?) outside of the US.

If you're paying in GBP for a .com etc. then there's a good change the provider you're buying from is paying for it in USD; it works out well for them at the moment, but will likely get more expensive for them in future as exchange rates change.

Likewise paying for a .uk domain is usually cheapest via a UK provider (i.e. paying in GBP) since the wholesale price is set in GBP.

As an example:

We offer our UK Unmanaged VPS:5 from £10.95/month
The same plan in the US from $12.95/month

At the current exchange rate you'll see the difference at about $10/month - but the exchange rates at the moment are somewhat extreme in that USD is very weak. Not that long ago the difference would have been more like $5/month.

Hope that helps.

So, the annual difference for an unmanged VPS plan will be about $100? That's a lot, I'd say.
What about support cost?

First, obviously my post just provides one example; it depends on the package you want as to what the difference is. Whilst agree that $100 over a year may be a significant amount, people looking for services of this nature will usually benefit by at least $100 from the UK based hosting.

We offer both US and UK based hosting because people's needs vary. If you want the cheapest hosting, US is most suitable. However, if you are running a serious website targetting the UK or West European market you often benefit (financially) from the enhanced connectivity/responsiveness offerred by hosting in the UK.

As someone already pointed out, the price differences are reflective of the different costs faced by providers in the UK vs. US. There's a lot more competition in the US market (between datacentres/carriers etc.) and therefore the wholesale costs of the hosting necessities are less.

Not sure what you mean here? Support included by both plans compared is identical in every respect. Any additional charges (e.g. for server admin work on an unmanaged plan) work out approximately the same after currency conversions since the cost of staff time is the same for both markets.
