it is part of geocities. it has been around for quite a while. after geocities advertising stopped bringing enough money to keep it operational they started web hosting to try to make some more money. That didn't work all that well because lets face it, who the hell wants to be hosted by geocities.
Once they pretty much collapsed and Yahoo bought them out yahoo just kept the web hosting along with it.

I used yahoo webhosting for my personal site for a year or so back a few years ago.
My experences then where fairly ok. Never needed support so I cant say how well they respond to issues. Given my experence is more than 2 years old I would have to say its probably not valid any more.

Beware of registering your domain through Y! I don't know if they still do it, but back a year or so ago, a client got their domain name through Y! (with Y! hosting - and the hosting was fine, btw, but I was cheaper).
Anyway, because of the way Y! registers a domain, you need them to release the domain before you can move it to a new host or transfer it to a new registrar. It took us nearly 6 weeks of hell, phone calls, e-mails, and assorted other unsundry activities to transfer the domain.
As I say, she had no probs with the hosting of the site, but it was the domain registry where they get ya. It almost comes to the point where it's cheaper and easier to stay with them than to move to a new host or registrar that is 1/2 the price.

Hi I have had a site hosted at yahoo for 2 1/2 years. This is before they switched their new customers to geo-cities. Their uptime is very good.
They pay for domain name registration for life which is why moving domain will take some time. They dont offer php mysql but they do have server solutions but expensive from what I remember. They use miva for their shopping cart system. I have requested tech support and got it but not very quickly. So If you can live with miva and dont need php or mysql solutions they are ok if you need special stuff I would look elsewhere. hth dave

I had a site hosted with yahoo. They were very good to work with. And in regards to what grumpus said about transfering names...I did not experience any of that. I just tranfered a name from them, and it was easy as pie. I just went to the company's site who I want to transfer the name to, put in my order, pay. Then u get a confirmation email at the admin contact email of the domain, click some links, and either accept or deny the transfer.
They made doing a lot of complex tasks easy as well. And if you host with Yahoo Small Business hosting, the support is pretty good.
My experience with Yahoo was excellent.
