Any reason to have more than 1 FTP account?

What is the purpose of having more than one FTP account? The reason I ask, is because I plan to make the switch from php to vB soon, and I want to run them both simultaneously whlie I make the switch. I'll keep my original, php, forums running, while I try and get all data into vB and all mods and stuff I want. I also have a feeling I may mess up, and this way, I can do a trial and error type of thing until vB is up and running. Only then will I phase out the php forums, and make the switch.

So, my question is, will I be able to do this when I only have 1 FTP account.

Thanks in advance. And I seriously can't emphasize how much of a help this site has been. You guys are great.

multiple accounts were used when there is multiple users set at different level. if you are sole user of your account so i advise to have only one account so you will not mixed up with your passwords.

if you want to make a subdomain for your test site it will require you to have a new ftp account right? and youre afraid to get mixed up. since youre new site will be vb site set your old ftp account to read access level only. wait for more suggestions.

I haven't tried for a new subdomain. I guess I would need another FTP account. Anyway, thanks for the response. I want to hear what others think too.

With cPanel and DirectAdmin your subdomain is just a directory under your main domain so 1 ftp is still good. This is also true at Godaddy and DreamHost hosting companies using their control panels.

Under LxAdmin a sub domain requires a seperate ftp and they are completely seperate from the main account.

You want to say, you are trying to change the site from PHP to ASP(vbscript)/ASP.net(vb)? Are you sure you have hosted on windows? If so, it is possible. having just 1 FTP is not an issue as long as you are sure that you wont mess up.

I would recommend you to set it up on your local IIS and test everything before you go live. If I can give an advice, do not go for the change. PHP with its flexibility and tons of quality opensouce software, is way better than anythign else for small/medium sites.

I appreciate the advice, but I am set on getting vB.

Anyway, maybe this was already answered, but my lack of knowledge did not pick up on it. If this is the case, I apologize, but here is my question:

Right now, I am using Filezilla to access my FTP. I have all php files there, and everything is running smoothly. Like I said before, I want to keep this running while I test vB and try to get that installed. So, would I just dump my vb files in the same place as my php files are? That seems to be the only thing I can do since I have one FTP account. I will obviously make a seperate folder for the vB install, but they will still be in the same place.

After that, how would I go about installing it, without overwriting my existing forums. thanks for the responses guys.

There is a step in the installation insturctions, that says
"When this is done, point your browser at http://www.example.com/forums/install/install.php (where www.example.com/forums/ is the URL of your vBulletin) and proceed to click the Next Step buttons until the script asks to fill in some addresses and names for your board."

My phpbb forums are located on my main page *****.com. So, if I did forums.*****.com/install/install.php, would that ensure they are both running simultaneously?

If you dump it all in the same directory, I can't see how you will ever get it sorted out again even if you are lucky enough for there not to be a duplicate name.

I really don't know anything about vb. Once in a similar situation I dumped all the new files in a directory under the main site. When I was ready to switch over all I had to change was 2 lines in the config file after I copied all the files to the root directory. The ones that specified the base url.

I think I would try that before I broke my main site.

Sorry I can't be more help.
