First you need to provide more information when asking for help. This would include the site url along with what script you may be using if any for your portal. It would also help to read the faqs page on the portal site the documentation on installation.

If for some reason your unable to understand this and or others people input you may need to hire someone. There are plenty of places you can do this including this forum.

Of course you do need to use ftp to upload the script. However as a suggestion you may want to check into wordpress for a portal. It is much easier to use and to install. Not only is it a great blogging script but the best cms you can find. If you were to add dot com to my sn you will be able to understand somewhat that you will be able to do. Joomla is too complicated and limiting in my opinion. There are probably many who would disagree. However as a first timer to running such a site as it appears you must be I suggest Wordpress.

You may want to invest in a web hosting account that includes either Installatron or Fantastico. These are two of the most common 'auto-script installers'. You will be able to install a wide variety of portals and the like by simply clicking a button and selecting a username and password pair.

Any decent web hosting package will come with Installatron or Fantastico. They make the difference between getting bogged down with building your site and being able to get on with creating what you want.

I do not recomend fantastico due to the fact the if you use it too install multiple scripts it will not remove the amount of space used from the panel. That is unless you remove that file. That of course would affect your other scripts.

For backup purposes you will want to have a local copy on your machine as well. It is also handy for uploading plugins.

If you do not have a web host please make sure you have one before proceeding. Then you will need to create your data base and user and password for it. You will want to research on how to do this and looking up the type of control panel you have would be helpful in finding out how. Data base info is entered into the proper script location as cpuser_dbname cpuser_username and password.

Next you will want to follow directions carefully on the wordpress install readme. If your unable to follow these you will not be able to understand what any of us will tell you here. If such is the case you will want to hire someone.

I belive Joombla and some other CMS scripts have support where you can pay a few $ to have someone install it for you. I myself am looking at modifying a Joombla for a local church.

I found the install to be very easy and its fairly well documented.

You will find out that each script will have its own unique install requirements and methods but nearly all of them will require hosting with PHP support as well as MySql support to store the data.

Thanks,

I have read the instructions that have come with the portal. It says for me to open the notepad file and enter the DB information, and save.

One problem. What database is it talking about? Where do i find this information?

THe portal or content management system as they are often referred as require a database to store the content of the system. Your host needs to offer to you a database of some type thats supported by your portal sytem. The most common database thats offered is mysql.

If your account does not have database support then to use a system like this you will need to upgrade your account to one that does support a database.

The directions are expecting you to have already setup a database with your hosting control panel. How do you do that? Well it will depend on your host but here is a list of some tutorals and one of them is how to create a database with the common cpanel hosting system. http://www.v7inc.com/support.php

Look down at the MySQL Databases section. Once you have created the DB and the DB user and assigned the user to the DB you will need to edit a config file or enter in the installer the database name, username and password for that database so the script can connect to the database.
