Red face mysql database with hosting?

Hi

I am not that clever with databases, I was wondering if I could use a database on another host and link my website from the host I have now to that database?

if so can this make any problems?

The host I use is OK and I have been with them along time but they only have 100mb databases, and i want a bigger one, if this can be done can any one recommend a cheap host that is trusting and reliable with a good size mysql database offer?

It is technically possible to use a database from some other hosting provider. However, this will almost certainly cause your site/scripts to run slowly because you'll introduce additional latency between your webserver and your database server.

The other issue that you may encounter is that most decent hosts will restrict database access to the local server rather than making it open access, since this is a good idea from a security point of view (i.e. less chance of people gaining access to your databases to mess them up).

As a side-note, we don't limit MySQL database size - it's just part of your overall space quota (e.g. you get 1GB for your website, emails, logs, database etc.). This is quite common, so I don't think you'd struggle to find hosts with a similar approach.

You may consider onthespothosting.net shared hosting plans with unlimited number of databases in them.

a website connection to remote database is ok.
in nature the mysql can be remotely connected.
each hoster have their procedure, basically you need to inform support to enable remote access. you need to provide IP ad whitelist.

however some hoster will not allow other server with shared ip to connect to their server. so, there solution will lead to a dedicated IP.

I have tried MSSQL server connection with another host, but that slowed down the page execution very much. It will definitley be slower than local/direct connection in most cases. I wont recommend it, even if the hosts allow connection from outside.

Database on different server is recommended in a clustering system only, and all they should connect within the same LAN. Otherwise, you will face to network performance issues.
