EV1 takes peoples money for services not performed. EV1 will bill you even after you request your billing be stopped and clam you never tried to turn your account of 'properly' or you did not click the "are you really sure you want to close your account e-mail link".

They also appear to have incopentent tech support that has been known to lose peoples hard drives or to replace the wrong drive in a server leaving the customer with an unfunctioning system and then when called out about it they say "opps i guess we messed up".

Quote:
Wide area circuit speeds
- DS0: 64 kilobits a second (about the speed of a fast dialup modem)

- T1: 1.544 megabits a second (typical speed of a small/mid-sized ISP's connection to the net)

- DS3: 45 megabits a second (the speed of OSU's vBNS connection)

- OC3: 155 megabits a second (the UO will be connected to Abilene via two OC3 circuits)

- OC12: 622 megabits a second (the speed of the highest speed national commodity network backbones)

- OC48: 2.4 gigabits a second (the Abilene backbone speed at startup)

- OC192: 9.6 gigabits a second (eventual speed of the Abilene backbone)

- ethernet: 10 megabits/second (the speed of most UOnet connections)

- fast ethernet: 100 megabits/second (the speed at which many campus servers connect to UOnet. Where available, individual users can purchase fast ethernet connects for $250 each)

- gigabit ethernet: 1000 megabits/second (current speed of UOnet backbone)
That should give you an idea on the other question.

No but if they are at EV1 then they to could suffer such levels of incompency and disreguard. Since your a customer of them then you to are at risk by being hosted on a box at such a location.

EV1 servers is a rather popular company after their brief period of $1 setup servers. The service is generally not that bad.

Some of our servers are hosted at EV1-S, and we've received very good service thus far. Their support can sometimes be slow, but the network seems quite stable.

It's not so much the technical service that they provide, as the service representatives. Tech support is paid $8 per hour with no wage increase for seniority, which leads to a high turn-over rate as the "good" techs leave for higher jobs. Employee moral is low because they are told that the company cannot afford pay raises while they watch upper managemant buy yachts, private box seats at the stadium, limosines with 24-hour chaffeurs with company money. This means the representative working with you tends to be taciturn and doesn't really go out of his/her way to assist you. The classic example is where they lost a hard drive full of a customer's business data because one of the techs in the chain didn't read the full support ticket, and missed the part about leaving the drive in place.

There is also the fact that a lot of their business policies (such as the TOS) are designed to award your money to them in the case of any disputes.

I'm not particularly happy that they are using the employee that recently died as an example of their standards. It feels a lot like they are using his memory to serve their ends.

In case you are wondering where I get my information, my fiancee is an ex-employee and my roommate is one of the evening supervisor for Rackshack. Not to mention dozens of friends who have worked for them at one point or another.

I agree. That's why we offer off-site backups for all clients. In the unlikely event that something were to happen, it would be restored immediately.

Neither am I. It seemed a little out of line to me.

Users should always be keeping their own back-ups. Never rely on a third-party to provide for that.

I agree, but there's invariably one or two which don't and then eventually need their site restored regardless.

Well the way I see it unless you do offer a backup service then it should be made very clear that the customer is responsible for their own data including backups and while you might help a customer restore a backup they have you dont perform the acutal backup procedure.

So far as I know, most providers are pretty implicit on this. I used to use this as a basic question in a pre-sales e-mail.

But, really, the user should always ensure they have full backups, and never rely on anyone else. This is especially important where databases are at risk.

Yeah, they do now. For a Fee that is not re-funded to you after you cancel the server and your backup space before it was ever used. (within 3 days of order). Besides the faq that your RAQ images are so poorly done that they can't even complete the backup process on the server.
