Preach on brother! Not that the OP necessarily fits this category of person but: I never understood the people who didn't evaluate their needs before trying to buy. Work out what you need, how much you can spend, whats more important to you,
then for shopping. That way you know exactly what you want, and when you find it, you know it. Just because a host doesn't offer the same bottom-feeder prices, doesn't mean is not a great value. What it comes down to is: don't forget to evaluate your situation. Don't get caught up in numbers that mean nothing.
Now, about HostGator. They are key player right now no doubt. Lots of happy customers. I personally have had accounts with them and to me their service was defiantly decent. There are better hosts, but HG ain't too bad. Not the best server speeds, occasional downtime, but overall: decent.
