Configuring SMTP on Win 2K3 Ad Server R2

I have a Windows 2003 Advance Server R2 running IIS, PHP, MySQL PHP Pear Mail/Net_mail and have over 50+ IP-based sites on the box.

I would like to use SMTP for outgoing email but everytime I start SMTP, the Queue folder gets innundated SPAM mail that uses the open relay (right... just turn off relaying; but see below).

When I turn off relaying, I can no longer send email using PHP Mail.

I'd appreciate any advice and/or good resources to configure IIS SMTP for PHP Pear Mail.

Thanks.

Maybe you need only email hosting. It can be very useful for you and you'll pay less for that.

If you already have around 50+ sites running on the machine I'd recommend not to also run an smtp server on it too. An smtp server is known for eating quite some ram, and you don't want it to affect the sites you're running.

Thanks for the responses. I've considered the option of getting a dedicated mail server, but would like to explore the option to harden the SMTP server from SPAMmers.

Use a specialized mail server rather than the windows default one. Mailenable, even free version is a good option. It gives you a lot of controls and options for everything including spam protection.

Or you can use if you afford it, Exchange 2003/2007. It's all you need, but it's expensive too.
