Mainly the site owner uses the information supplied by it. It will let the owner know where the traffic is going, what pages people like the most, which pages they are leaving from. It's is also used by advertisers who are putting ads on your site to judge which ads will work the best and if your site is a place they would want to place an ad on.

Advertiser really don't care what your site is ranked at. Getting "hits" can be easy. They want to know "who" comes to your site and how long they are on there. How long your visitors will see their ads.

I think the best solution is Google Analytics, its brilliant. There is also a little demo of what it is doing, you may want to check it out. But the best way to see what is all about is to try it on your own site.

yes, if you want to track all spiders, the complete info about all kind of hist etc. Otherwise google analytics would be a great choice for its superb GUI and related info.

Many companies provide server monitoring in their package plans. I believe it's very convenient. Say Webhostingbuzz.com, Dreamhost.com and ServerPoint.com provide it.

Access Logs
Error Logs
Traffic Stats - WebAlizer
Detailed Bandwidth Stats
Server Load Stats
At least MarbleHost.com provide it.

I think not only MarbleHost.com provides web site monitoring that is included into the package plans. This company provides even a lot of free bonuses for their customers. Big plus for them.

I prefer Urchin which costs a bit unless your using google analytics.
