None.
Very few of the gross over-sellers deliver.
Read all the fine print in the TOS to fully understand what you are buying.
HG is no better or worse than most.

Yes that is right. A good search in some of the reputed forums will give you an over all idea about them. And you can try a direct analysis by asking a few pre sales questions also. That will give you an idea about their service.

I been using them for a while now for my forum hosting. Based on the experience with quite a few companies, its not bad. I would give them 6.5/10.

I've used them for a couple years and have been very satisfied. I don't have super aggressive needs, but the few times I have needed support they have been very prompt and helpful. And you can't beat their prices!

yes, they oversell space but i've been on a bunch of hosts in around 9 years and so far hostgator for me has been the best. plus, i haven't noticed any sluggish server speeds on my oversold server.

Host gator is ok.
In general I would watch out for too cheap hosting. Because what they do is to put too many accounts on the same server. Which leads to problems.

So long as you don't have a big site like a high traffic vb forum with tons of addons and excessive DB connects. HG will work well for you.

My forum is running there. There are some times when I get DB errors, but not a whole lot. Best thing is speed is great.

Yes, as far as shared hosting goes, I consider hotgator to be one of the best. I also think downtown host is very good too. If you get a large forum or other application that uses a lot of resources, you have to go to a VPS or dedicated. There really isn't a shared host that can handle something like that long term.

Which ones are good you think for VPS or dedicated besides downtown?

Ive used hostgator when I was starting out, im not on a dedicated server, but if your not needing the cpu power, then shared is okay to go and hostgator isn't bad.

For shared I like hostagator and lunarpages. Can't think of any other shared hosts that I would personally recommend though I've tried many. Hostgator or Lunarpages.

I got reasonably good uptime with hostgator, nearly 99.9% most of the months. From my experience, their uptime is one of the best among the oversellers.
Also, their support is pretty fast and friendly. So, I would personally rate them as one of the best shared host at the price range they offer.
Regarding overselling, there is nothing much you can do about it. Most of them offer huge amount of resources, but they do have limits based on CPU usage, which would keep the bigger sites away. For normal sites, they are a good option. Obviously there are going to be few people with not so good opinion, that happens with every host.

Really tired of sharing my thoughts of hostgator... I prefer not to deal with large hosts...
