Getting users to upgrade their accounts

Hello. Please check the site http://www.onlinelogomaker.com/applet/logomaker/index.php?user=test
There's 2 types of accounts - Basic and Premium. The Premium accounts offer more symbols and more fonts.

Right now we do this: the Premium symbols/fonts have a golden outline. When the user clicks over a Premium symbol for example, the site opens a graphical message saying that such symbol is only available for Premium users, and invites the user to upgrade his account.

I have some concerns about this scheme:

- Won't the users get turned off when seeing this message?
- Will the users even read the message, or will they just think the site doesn't work and quit?

Do you know of a better scheme to get the users upgraded?

Your shortened URL was removed by another mod before I got to this post. (Shortened/cloaked URLs are not permitted on v7n.)

Without having seen your site, I'm assuming that you have your free and premium content intermixed on one or more pages. If that's not the case, please ignore what follows. I'd suggest having the free fonts in one section of your site and the premium ones in a separate area. You could link from the free to the premium area with one or more "See more" buttons.

I think people who are happy with your free fonts will get irritated if you're constantly beating them over the head to upgrade.

Hello Bob, thank you for replying. Your point of view makes a lot of sense indeed.
I have fixed the link. Could you take a look at my site now?

I don't find this very usable at all.

Your design (although it looks very sleek, colour contrast issue though) doesn't fit my monitor (in height).

Your popup when I selected a paid font I couldn't close and choose something else.

Where does it say (in an obvious spot) that the "gold" fonts are premium?

Thank you for your reply! Could you clarify me some points?

- What do you mean by contrast issue? Do you think there's too much contrast?
- Is the design too tall for your screen? What's your res? Could you provide me a screenshot?

Thanks again!

@HTMLBasicTutor Thank you so much for all this info!!!

How did you get this contrast info? Is it an automated software or did you do it manually?
Also, could you tell me what you think about the price of $9 for the Premium accounts?

Thanks again.

I used Colour Contrast Analyser version 2.2 for the colour contrast information. It is part of the Web Accessibility Toolbar. There is a version for Opera here: http://www.paciellogroup.com/resources/wat/opera
