Question phpBB and vBulletin

Has anyone switch from phpBB to vBulletin or vice versa. If so what were your reasons that made you switch from one to the other. Is one truely better than the other?

I moved several forums (including this one) from phpBB into vB. I believe vBulletin is much more powerful and has better security.

It all depends on your own specie.
If you are open source one that there are lot of goods in phpBB
but if you are close source one then vBulletin will suit your needs.

Biggest communities are running on phpBB.

I think most are run on phpBB, but I wouldn't say the biggest (in member size) run on there... vB is supposed to handle more members a lot better then phpBB.

if you ment biggest as in popular, maybe so.

In a word, yes. vB has significantly more features and is significantly more secure than phpBB. Whether the latter is mainly down to the fact phpBB is freely available, therefore something of a free-for-all for script kiddies looking for security holes is really neither here nor there - the point is a vB forum is less likely to be attacked, which in my book is what counts.

I've always thought that the biggest benefit of open source software is that generally support is freely and widely available, but vB has a great community offering 3rd party plugins etc which are easily comparable to the best of the open source bunch.

It just comes down to price.

(I'm still looking forward to seeing how phpBB3 works out though, should it ever happen )

IPB

"NeverEverNoSanity" scared me away from phpBB, as well as the continous "exploit found" each passing week.

Personally I like Invision Power Boards, specifically version 1.3, it was so easy to mod and use and skin (IMO).

Shame it isn't open-source.

I do like phpBB but the more I look over vbulletin itself and other sites (such as this one) I'm leaning more towards vbulletin.

One last question. This probably applies more to vBulletin because there is enough info for me on this on the web for phpBB. How easy/hard is vBulletin to be seemlessly integrated with other scripts? For example, I'm trying to put together a social networking site for my niche and just about 95% of the scripts out there for this type of website have bulletin boards that are just not acceptable for my taste, so no matter what script I go with I will definetely have to have either phpBB or vBulletin integrated.

I used to love phpBB. But then I got vB and realized why phpBB is free.

Imo phpbb can't compete with vBulletin.

I got one big Forum (2 Mio Posts) running on vBulletin and it's running very smooth.

For my next project I have chosen the Invision Power Board but I have to say that I maybe gonna regret that buy. vBulletin looks way more organized to me and got a much bigger hacking community.

As a regular forum user, I much prefer vbulletin.

For me, this mod makes phpBB very useful:

http://www.phpbbfetchall.com/

It allows you to have 1 universal login for all the pages on your site. It gives you access to the $userdata array, so you can check if someone is logged in or not, whether they have certain values set, etc. You can put "top posts" on your home page, or anything else really. It basically allows phpBB to integrate 100%.

So I have a "subscriber" variable that is set when someone does a Paypal donation, and it unlocks certain parts of the membership, and it's all driven by phpBB and phpBB Fetch All.
