World’s Most Popular Screen Resolution Now At 1366×768

This the same screen size that i've been using for years.

There’s something to be said about having a great screen resolution. I use a 16:10 monitor at 1680×1050 with my PC. Not exactly the enthusiast golden standard of 1920×1080 but it serves me well and looks great to boot. That’s why all the more distressing that most people in the world don’t really care about resolution as much as I do.

For the longest time, people have been content with a paltry 1024×768 resolution. For the first time in three years, 1024×768 has finally fallen behind a competing resolution. The new most popular resolution worldwide is now a better, but still really small, 1366×768. This information comes from...

That sure is going to make a lot of those 800 wide sites look small.

I run 1440 x 900 and have for a few years. The hardware can do the 1920 thing but the old eyes are happier here.

Maybe you need eyeglasses. I wear bifocals and they were giving me fits when I spent any long period on the computer. A few months back when I got a new prescription I got the Doc to make me a custom single vision pair for computer use only. The are tuned to focus exactly at 36", my normal viewing distance. It has made a major difference.

Let me ask one new question to all those who use higher screen resolution than me.

Do you maximize the windows or keep windows open side by side?

At work, I have a Dell UltraSharp U2311H - 23" resolution 1920x1080.

I tend to keep my windows maximized. Only if I need to, I open them side by side (while coding, ftp etc.) but it gets cramped very quickly. My desk is not that big, but I might get a second screen IF I need one.

Back to the article:

1024x768 always seemed like a strange resolution to me. I have to check my old screens what max resolution they support.
Anyways: Bigger average means less hassle while coding websites.

The world is moving further and developing day by day and so are the processors, so why should a monitor screen should lack behind ? One thing is for sure that, as much as the length of the screen will be, more clear will be the visibility to the people. A person will get more comfort and soothing effect. However for a common man it will take some time because still 17" monitors/TFT are in trend these days.

GOOD. Most Popular Screen Resolution Now maybe 1366×768.

but this will be changed so quickly. An easy way can know the "Most Popular Screen Resolution", it's the website analytic.

Good to know. For a while now recommend width for a website is in 1000px range which covers large majority of popular resolutions so popularity of 1366 x 768 does not changes anything in terms of design.

so nowdays it would be better to do design with 1140 width and responsive enough to scaled down to 960px (iPad) and another design to cope with mobile (320px)?

or just stick to good old 960px grid?
