Most people use a higher resolution these days anyway, right?

That depends a lot on your particular visitors, but even 10% of your visitors is a lot of people to ignore.

What the users hate most for a site are the following:
1. The users usually go to a site with attractive , simple design and with a lot of content.
2. Users don't want a site with large graphics or images that cause slow loading. Flashy effect would be fine, but need to consider the loading time.
3.

Have come to this post late so apologies if some of these have already been covered -
1. Music that starts as soon as I land on a page, give me the option to play it if I want to - don't force it on me, otherwise the chances are I will leave and never return.
2. I have nice big screen 24" and for obvious reasons I choose not to have my browser window maximised, so please don't force my browser to resize and fill my screen, it makes your site look bad and makes me want to close it.
3. Don't have a splash page with an 'enter site button' I already made the choice to visit your site so I would rather get to the content with as few clicks as possible.
4. Overuse of flash, I have a decent connection and I am used to websites loading in 1-2 seconds, so if you have built your entire site in flash I am going to get impatient even if we are only talking 10-15 seconds. Chances are I might move on before the page loads.

I agree. I can't stand when I load a site and some one starts talking or they have music playing. I'm listening to my own music I don't need yours! If you have someone or something talking, make it easy to shut off or give an option to turn it on. I will leave a site right away and not come back when something starts talking.

Use the left for navigation if it suits your site but beware of using your top for navigation because some search robots use the words at the top as your site's keywords.
Just my 2pn worth advice.

LOL! Agree.
Plus! I might not even like the music on your site.

Funny thought because if you press ctrl shift a on this page you get 104 errors.
YET it's a successful site with great content and ranking.
I am dubious of the value of xhtml in web pages. On web pro world I've read stories of people xhtml'izing their sites and losing ranking. I think it happened to my site but I can't be sure because there were too many variables during the time period.

Did we get this one yet? Intentional popups that resize the browser to smaller than full width, load a page wider than the browser and turn off browser resizing.

I feel right hand side has been neglected not because its an ad-only space. People generally read from left to right. So by the time they reach the right end, they move down?
No, this wasn't supposed to be a joke.

I hate hoverads - especially the ones with the nervous shake. You've seen the videos of the man throwing his computer monitor. . . If I see another hoverad, I may do the same thing.

Wouldn't this harden the fact that the right side is for banners then? (DOH!)
