Buy banner and text ads from relevant websites. Post in relevant forums and add your website link to your sig.

Try use some analytics tools to see when your visitors leave your website.
I like CrazyEgg but GoogleAnalytics, IndexTools, ClickTracks (can not remember the exact names of the latter two) etc. can all be a help.

That way, you can start to experiment and optimize the individual pages to better have your visitors reach your "goal" / important pages.

Anyway another good counter is www.statcounter.com it gives you all the information you need.

But it also says which may answer your question if you already have a counter:

If you only install the StatCounter code on one page of your website and your visitors never reload that one page. Then your visit length will always be less than 5 seconds! It is highly recommended to install the same code on all pages of your website you want to track.
