Paypal shopping cart
Im currently setting up a paypal shopping cart for a client.
They are asking whether the customers have to sign up to paypal to be able to purchase through the cart. As far as i can see, the customers need to enter a username and password before paying, in effect creating a paypal account.
My client doesnt really want this, they just want them to be able to enter a credit card and paypal processes it.. is this possible?

I read that, but all I can see when setting it up is that the users have to sign up!
I really cant see how to do it any other way.

You might need to tick some 'paypal account optional' related boxes in your account preferences.
Some people have had trouble with cookies, PayPal may decide to show you a different page if you have a cookie that show's you've been logged in before than if you appear to be completely 'new'!
Please update, I'll need to know about this for a couple of projects!

i see what bluepoint is saying but my question is...why wouldn't your client want to setup a paypal account? just make one account under his business name so his customers can make payments to his paypal account. why is this a problem for him? takes a few minutes to set one up...

drew68 - his client will have / has a paypal account.
The problem is, requiring end-users to signup to paypal before they can complete a purchase, is a deterant.

Yeah thats what Im thinking.
They can actually go through the process without signing up, but it still creates an account but its transparent to them. It seems tricky for novice users though.

No, your clients users do not need a paypal account. They can have and pay through a paypal account or they can use a variety of credit cards. There are different types of paypal business accounts and the norm one I think is the one that doesn't require an account. I just set mine up yesterday and they are like a 4 question questionarre on what I wanted to do with my paypal account - i filled it out and was recommended to use that option.

however when you are testing a site you are working on, you may need to delete all paypal cookies to get the same experience as a person who has not got a paypal account.
if paypal sees one of it's cookies (like when you have logged on in the past) it will not offer you an option to pay without logging on.
So if you've already ticked the correct options, you need to try what I just said too.

Wow! Thanks to everyone for all the great info. I have been using paypal for years and my ebay feedback is 447. I thought you had to have a paypal account. I have never had the option to not log in either. John whas it just a paypal business account?

Paypal has an option of paying without a Paypal account
If the customer or anyone else that uses their computer doesn't have a Paypal account, there will be an option where they can pay without Paypal. If they do have a Paypal account, Paypal will remember and try to log them in. In this situation, the customer will have to erase cookies on their browser so Paypal doesn't remember them.

Log into your PayPal account >> Profile >> Website Payment Preferences
Note: You'll find two radio buttons under "PayPal Account Optional"...
Selecting YES or NO depends on your needs....
