I totally agree with LazyJim, I run my own web design agency and have recently made the switch to creating accessible and usable websites using css et al to layout pages.

By using CSS for laying out your website you can achieve a website that looks the same regardless of:
  • Browser
  • Platform
  • Screen Resolution

What's better is that search engines find your website easier to crawl since there are no complex tables to interpret and navigate around.

For example, have a look at my newly revamped website http://www.pinklink.biz, try changing your screen resolution, browser or platform and see the results.

Once the benefits of CSS are fully realised I don't think anyone would ever dare layout a page using tables again!

My Analytics report says 8.06% users use 800x600 resolution screens!

Owing to this resolution difference I refrain from designing sites which lie in the width range of 900s and 1000s of pixels!

My sites normally are a fixed width 780px or a Fluid width 100%, takes care of most of my problems at the same time giving the similar state of usability to my users!

Well,, firstly I think we owe Labrocca some brownie points for his investigative work - *bows*

Unfortunately, what you failed to realise was that the template I am using was one that I had personally created by hand-coding in Dreamweaver.

If you don't understand how templates can be used to increase productivity and workflow in a design agency, then I pity you.

Secondly, if you are going to quote me, then please quote me correctly. I said that we

NOT that we have recently made the switch to creating pages using CSS. Check it.

Finally, what relevance did your comment have to this forum thread? If you would like to discuss something like that, you should have PM'd me.

I can't believe no one linked to this. Very comprehensive.
~15% (according to the link) is still significant IMO. I'm seeing less on one of my sites, but I haven't bothered to check them all:

Interesting poll. I wouldn't know where to find this stat.

I do feel however web designers should design for 1024x768 and up, making it the visitors obligation to have the correct requirements to view your site.

As of now, I think most templates of mine are always suited for 1024x768 and up, that most 800x600 users will always see the annoying scroll bars.

Interesting but I'm seeing about 8% of visitors using Firefox on my site, and one Opera visitor so far this month... I guess that must have been you...

I'm also getting around 37% IE7 users, which suprised me, but to get back on topic, I'm getting around 9% with 800x600 pixel screen resolution.

Around 10 - 15% for my websites, however I design most of my sites in a way that the width fits well with all screen resolutions!

My two main sites are having less than 5% 800x600 visitors but I still only design for that resolution. The reason being that my web pages are predominently to diseminate factual information and stories - eg Oswestry Town Walls. Since this is mainly intended to be read on-screen I do not want to have longer lines of text or have the text any larger font (adjustable with the browser anyway). Niether am I keen to have extra content in wide margins which might detract from the main content.

I suppose I would think and design differently if the purpose of the site was to sell something.

lol! I agree. I had my dad's monitor at 1024x768 and he even asked me to lower the resolution. He's not very young. But he finally got used to the 1024x768.
