How much is too big?

I'm pretty new to Website Designs.. I most just mess with different things. Like Animation.. right now I'm working on making different peices of a Flash website.. Which will be all combined together to make One site..

So I was just wondering what is too big in your opionions. I'm not doing this for any profit. It just would be cool to have a nice looking website that people would like to stop by and say Thats pretty nice looking..

Right now I was messing with a little thing http://www.underworldassailants.com/Charter1.html

Just a book that is looped and turns pages atm.. Its 200kb.. Which I'm probably going to add text and make it have multiple pages for people to view information about us on ( how we work)

* The site I'm making is for a "Guild" since I'm a gamer. They bought a Domain and webhosting and I was in the guild and noone knew how to make websites so I Volunteered to be the one who can learn all of this stuff since I plan to go to school for programming anyways.

Any Input would be great, Thanks

- Ian

you should be ok as adding text to flash doesn't add a lot of k... but if you are going to include a lot pictures at a high quality it can make the file quite huge. I have some flash pieces that are over a meg, but it is that way for a reason. It just depends who the audience is and what the flash needs to entail.

Well, 200k would load in about 5-15 seconds, depending on Internet connection. I'd advise replacing Flash with text wherever possible, really. Most web site stuff can be done with web programming, IMHO.

Unless Flash is the only way to present the information

It wouldn't be very challenging to add it in to straight html page.. But then it wouldn't be as "Flashy" looking.. We already have a Html site and I was wanted to make the Flash site.. And I wanted to add some what of a cool effect to it.

i think what they are saying is that a lot of the effects you can do in javascript. Personally I love flash... i would prefer doing every website in flash, but that is just me. Since it isn't a business website.. why the heck shouldn't you use flash. Flash is fun and creative... artsy. I say go for the flash

Well, in that case make sure there is some text (including title and meta tags) on the flash pages, so you could get indexed with the search engines and potentially get some traffic.

If the traffic isn't important and site loading speed aren't important, you can use Flash..at your own risk.

Personally I don't like Flash. If I goto visit a website and it's made totally in flash I will most of the time just leave as I can't be bothered with it. Most sites can be made in HTML and load faster and don't lock up the computer if you have too many of them

I would suggest not go to flash. Make those sites where contents are restricted on images and writings. That is the search engine's favorite sites. Other things will not grab by the search engines. So for an SEO developed site, you must concentrate on the two basic things on your site.

I agree with pretty much everything above, while I don't like flash, I do like it at the right time int he right place.

In my opinion it's best when the user chooses to use the flash rather than it being forced upon them.
