Should you use a hamburger icon on your mobile menu?

Some things to take into consideration.

Quote:
The three-line ‘hamburger’ menu icon receives a lot of vitriol. It is variously described as “controversial”, “notorious” etc. but it is rapidly becoming the de facto symbol to open a navigational menu on a mobile website.

So perhaps it is time to learn to live with it and make it better.

The hamburger was created in 1980 by Norm Cox, for the Xerox “Star” personal workstation, the world’s first graphical user interface.

I like websites that are minimal and creative and the generic hamburger icon works really well, I've used it almost every single time.

When it comes to a mobile being used to browse a website, the last thing you want is to make the icon overdone or complex, just a nice simple and easy to use and view icon which you already know what will do.

Was a good read though definitely.

Do you have any minimal/simple alternatives?

I just find it's at the stage where it's clean and minimal not to mention we all know what it is before pressing on it.

I can vouch for a change but I wouldn't think of a suitable, alternative.

i'm in the camp of "not a fan" for websites, though think it's good on apps. I accept it as i do appreciate it's use, i just think it's not very fancy on websites. i usually find the graphic appears to be lower quality some reasons, as well as i like how within apps it'll typically spin around unlike websites it's just static.

is it common on iphone apps or just android?

Hamburger icon might be good from visual view, BUT it may be unreadable (poor ux) for older users.

Best way is to consider do we use hamburger only on small devices or on small, medium and big resolutions (not recommended but looks nice) or instead of hamburger icon we put text displaying "menu" with hover effect and cursor pointer.

Death by Hamburger

An article looking at the pros and cons of using a hamburger menu:
Quote:
...think before you burger. Navigation is a vital part of usability, and deserves careful thought and consideration. Hidden navigation is very often harmful to the user, though any design choice must always be considered within the overall context of the app’s goals and end users. It’s important to thoughtfully consider the hamburger menu’s use, rather than choosing it automatically because it’s trendy, or ‘that’s what everyone does.’...
