website load testing

Hi would anyone know about any software or scripts that could test out my website's maximum unique visitors before making it crash or slowing it to a crawl?
Atm i'm on a shared server so i'd find it interesting to see how much my site can handle with current php scripting and sql that's on it.
For ex sometimes if google and yahoo are crawling my site at the same time it can crash it for a few mins as there's alot of sql queries and pictures being requested.

WOW, that must be a really bad server or script if your site crashs just because two search engines visit your site.

If they crash your site you should certainly consider reviewing your script or moving server.

What script are you using, or have you made your own?

Thing is there's alot of pictures... and thumbnails. Since it's an auction site i have bout 5500 urls indexed in google. Google is at my site almost all day everyday but every once and a while, maybe 2 3 weeks my site will go offline for a few minutes now i'm guessing that that is the problem. But clearly unsure as to what it really is... Site never slows to a crawl it just goes from the constant speed to bam offline for 10 mins then comes back up.

No biggie but i want to know if 200 simultanious users come if it can handle it or not.

That's a tough one. I am assuming that you don't have 200 computers that you can setup loadtest software on and run tests. With that assumption, you will have to simulate those 200 requests. All the loadtesting software I have worked with relies on having 50 or 100 computers to hit the application at once.

I have written simulations to do unit and black box testing but nothing that has a general application. I suspect that may be the boat you are in. You may have to write a script that can feed a few hundred requests to the backend code and have it send it on to the sql dB.

Let us know what you end up doing on this one. I'm curious.

Sounds like script problems - but I could be wrong - post a link I'll run some tests on your server and the site. I'll try not to bring the server down.....lol

Ok ran some tests.

Your host is wide open to attacks and viruses.

Every port that can be hacked is wide open - it's probably not you it's your host - no mind for security at all -

he may have:
a doly-trojan using ports 1010 - 1015
deep throat on port 2140
WinCRASH on port 2583 and 3024
ICQ trojan on port 4590
Back Construction, Blade Runner on ports 5400 - 5402
Robohack on port 5569
and on and on......

Oh hell he's screwed.

Find a good host.

Sorry I should have expained - if hackers are pumping out thousands of spam emails, hacking the ftp or using the server for other purposes it affects the cpu and bandwidth .....
