Please only view this site in IE 11.4 on a 27" monitor.
This might not qualify as a "usability" thing, but something in the website review forum made me think about it.
People, if you can help it, please don't ever tell your users how to view your website. You're lucky to have vistors. Sure, you've worked hard for them, but at the end of the day they can make or break you and you can't do a whole lot to make their lives that much more fabulous. There are many other websites on the internet that they'll turn to if yours dissapoints.
So... I use mozilla because it's got a pop-up blocker, and sometimes I use Konqueror because it came with my OS, and if a website has a problem with this I just leave. I'm even asking for testing in every browser known to man, all I want is for people to stop having those painful "please use IE to view this site" messages everywhere. I mean, just because you've sold your soul to microsoft, I have to as well?
Usability is about making life easier for your viewers and I'm a viewer who gets in a really bad mood when a website goes and trieds to tell me what to do.
Who else agrees?

Well.... I do but.... it doesn't really put me in a bad mood though..
I guess I'm just a bit too apathetic about a lot of things... : /

It doesn't make me mad. It just makes me dissapointed. If someone makes a site that only works in one browser, then it was designed by a lazy person, IMO.

Yes I agree most definately.
Art is they only thing where you tell someone how to view it - and even then it's very rare.
In design you must respect the user, the user is your examinations marker, the user decides if you succeed - the proof of the pudding is in the eating.

Yah, it's very annoying when sites are like that. It's not THAT difficult w. a simple html site to make it work at least in both IE & Netscrap. It's not the most fun thing to do, but you're losing a lot of potential fans of your site if you don't account for more than 1 browser.

It's fine to tell them that it works better in another browser, but u should make sure it actually works in ANY browser!

it's the law of numbers
Most people just create sites for the majority. That's just the way the world is. Business in particular (at least a lot of the ones I've seen) usually suggest either IE or NS.
Although I've seen some sites that say "Don't use IE or your computer will crash." heh.

If a shop on the high-street got a new door installed that only let some people in and not others, you'de theink they were crazy! Yet on the web, that's exactly what people are doing!

i think your all giving waaaaaaaay to much credit to the people who 'have' to put up disclaimers like that... not everyone cares about anything other what they can do 'here and now' and the possible ramifications of whether or not a visitor is using ie or some other browser.... that includes small buisiness owners who would like to take advantage of the marketing possibilities of the internet, but who dont have the skill or funds to farm out the gig.
that why theres great programs like frontpage, so we dont 'need' to know how to make it perfect, just usable.
get off your high horse if you think that because the disclaimer is there, your too good for the site. and dont say you werent thinking it.

I have not used Opera, firefox or Mozilla as of yet - but i'm very happy with IE6 I have had no problems that would make me change. Also, support for IE is second to none.
