Question "Family-Friendly" or "No Adult Content"?

I hope this is the right place for this question.

I love to browse StumbleUpon and vote for my faves. If I really like a site, I also tag it for del.icio. Yesterday, I found a site I liked for viewing media clips and wanted to tag it, but del.icio demands to know if it has adult content. With most sites, that's fairly obvious, but with media clips I wasn't sure, so I wrote to the webmaster.

It turns out this site does not have adult content, but the question came up about how to address this issue so people can tag it for del.icio. IMO, saying "No Adult Content" might work against the site, because the "adult content" part might then get picked up by search engines and bring the wrong kind of visitors to the site. My suggestion is to say "family-friendly" because I think that's a term that would convey the same meaning without triggering the wrong kind of search criteria, but I have very little experience with these things.

Anybody else have any thoughts about this?

Suz

I don't see why they would lie to you when they say that they have no adult content on their website, if your unsure then just e-mail them again or e-mail the website you want to submit it to or whatever.

Suz, as far as I know, Stumble requires to know whether it is adult content too. And so do many other sites. I don't really see your problem...
Also, the "adult" or "no adult" is not a tag, but a way for the social networks to categorize a site. The search engines pay little to no attention to these things. I had recently troubles with Alexa, that has more adult spam sites in its results than any other search engine I know - and I doubt this has anything to do with the social networks. Frankly, there are not enough SN that accept adult content to make this an SE issue.

I'm sorry, I must not have made myself clear. I don't have a problem at all. I was trying to help a webmaster with a site full of videos. I wanted to help make it easier for him to get folks to tag his site for Stumble, etc.

When you go to a gardening site or a knitting site, or a porn site, the subject would never come up, because you'd know the answer without asking, but a video site could easily have adult content hidden away somewhere, even it wasn't on the front page. His did not, btw, but I had to write to him to find out before I could tag his site. I doubt if most people would take the time to do that, so I suggested that he put "family-friendly" somewhere near the top of his home page so others could tag his site without worrying about the adult content issue. Then I thought maybe I was being overly cautious, so I posted here to see what the rest of you thought about it. So now, 500 words later . . .

. . . Do you all think it's worth putting "family-friendly" or "no adult content" on a site that might go either way, so people who do social bookmarking would know how to tag it?

Since you contacted him, can you post his answer here?

Not that I am interested but as a user! If I come across a site I want to stumbleupon, I make the decision as to whether it is an adult site or not.

I like the family friendly notice.

I also like stumble upon's adult content. It's the best.

I feel, family friendly would be better. Because, the word, "adult" will prompt teens to google it... Even reading the word will prompt them to search for it.
