Shopping Cart
Sorry, seems like I am posting here quite a bit, but working on a big project and looking for feedback. If I am abusing this forum, please let me know.
In an e-commerce site, besides a shopping cart are there any other models that are used or are successful?
My personal feelings are to go with the shopping cart because people are comfortable with it and know what it is.

In Canada we have shopping canoes.
RingingPhone... as far as I understand, you are asking about the "metaphor" to use in reference to the system people use to purchase products? It's probably best to stick with a shopping cart. The level of website usability can be measured by how little the visitor is required to think (rather, it should be intuitive) so having a button that reads "Strap This To Your Ox Cart" would cause them to stop, scratch thier head, and most likely, click away.
The only reason I could see for breaking the standard, would be to fit to a very strong design/style theme you have going. So on a pirate-themed site you could say "Arrrr... plunder this booty!", but even then, add in brackets "(for the landlubbers, that means 'Add To Cart')".
Hope that addresses your question! If not, it was just an excuse to use pirate-talk in public.

Re: Shopping Cart
do you mean like features other then a cart that are good for a website?
Ive developed an entire custom suited staff management system for one business. Basically a good e-commerce solution for a business is a custom suited business solution that is developed to solve a businesses needs rather then changing a businesses needs to suit some pre-built package

I think my question got misunderstood. Let me try to re-phrase.
In an e-commerce site, users are used to putting something into their shopping cart, reviewing it and checking out. Is there a whole other method, other than a shopping cart that can be used to purchase one or multiple items?
Thanks.

"Buy Now" takes you straight to the checkout to buy single items.
You can also have the shopping cart always visible on the page, which soort of removes the need for a cart review page between adding stuff and checking out.
Or how about a "Buy random stuff!" button that puts a few items in the cart at random and goes to the checkout.
Actually, "Buy $100 worth of this item" might work for bulk buy products. (and the $100 can be set to any amount of course).

A shopping cart is a program that lets users shop on a website; they can click on items to add them to their "basket". At the end of their shopping they pay for all the items in the basket.
The shopping cart is the program, the basket is a component of that prog.
