What are the features of a really great forum?

I've had my forum for a little over a year and I've slowly worked out what I think makes a forum really great...

I personally think that a great forum has a good average range of the number of relevant responses per new thread.

I have yet to figure out the 'magic' number of responses, I am guessing between 15 and 25. Could be higher though.

Your thoughts on this?
And your personal thoughts on what makes a forum great for users?

Allowing signature files.
Friendly posters.
Good help from others.

It is not a hard rule. The responses depends on type of question, how well the question is formated, how well other people know about that topic ...

Even the first response in that thread could solve the problem in the question. It doesn't matter the number of responses but ongoing discussion should be there in the forums.

Depends. One exciting thread drawing the right people can already kickstart it. But most of it I think depends on the owner. The tone he sets, the things he allows, the team he picks and such.
An owner may or not be present all the time, but thru him everything trickles down to the "bottom" if you will.

If a forum owner just wants quick money, a forum is bound to fail. If someone wants to create an environment he himself enjoys reading thru and/or participating in, then it can be a winner.

An absence of trolls and dogmatic posters really improves the atmosphere in a forum.

I suspect this occurs because the moderators are astute and cause posters to amend their tone, or ban them.

As I write this I'm reminded of a forum like this one that is over-moderated in a way; it manages to have numerous locked threads AND trolls.

So my more considered answer would be that great forums have great moderators as a prerequisite.

I'll add...

Quality of content and responses - a few good posts with intelligent responses goes a long way.
