What's Your Alexa Traffic Ranking?

Hi,

What's your Alexa traffic ranking and how many hits do you get, per day?

Our site, for example, was at about the 4 million mark when we were at about 100 hits per day. (I know this sounds like a very low ranking but considering we were at over 20 million when we started, about 8 months earlier, we now seem to be moving up in the rankings very quickly and with no paid SEO. It's all pretty much just word of mouth.)

I'm curious to know how many hits per day gets a site to into higher rankings, like the 1 million mark, or the 100K mark, or even the 100 mark.

You can find your site's ranking at: alexa.com, on the Site Info tab (look up your site), and then click on the Traffic Stats tab, and finally on page Traffic Rank tabs to get your 1 month and 3 month averages. Alexa doesn't give you the number of hits you get per day. You'll have to get that from your analytics tools.

So, here's a 3 part question:

1) What's your site?
2) What's your 3 month Alexa ranking? and
3) How many hits per day is that equivalent to?

If we collect enough data on this, we should be able to understand what a site needs to achieve to hit certain ranking marks on Alexa.

(NOTE: Using Alexa is a great way to know if someone is being honest or dishonest about his or her claims of hits per day because you can always use the Alexa ranking to see if their claims are realistic.)

My Best,

Frank

Is alexa more accurate than say "Quantcast"? I use them both and it looks as though to me that the latter happens to break the traffic down a little better.

Any thoughts?

Quantcast is a full-blown in situ web analytics application, similar to Urchin/Google Analytics. View, for example, the source code of this page, and you will see the following code for both.

Code:
<script src="http://www.google-analytics.com/urchin.js" type="text/javascript"> </script> <script type="text/javascript"> _uacct = "UA-4812160-1"; urchinTracker(); </script> <!-- Start Quantcast tag --> <script type="text/javascript" src="http://edge.quantserve.com/quant.js"></script> <script type="text/javascript">_qacct="p-0b3h-OQlCaVM-";quantserve();</script> <noscript> <a href="http://www.quantcast.com/p-0b3h-OQlCaVM-" target="_blank"><img src="http://pixel.quantserve.com/pixel/p-0b3h-OQlCaVM-.gif" style="display: none;" border="0" height="1" width="1" alt="Quantcast"/></a> </noscript> <!-- End Quantcast tag -->
These script capture data re. all visitors to this page.

Notice that Quant also has a noscript sprite displayed, so that it at least gets a hit count even if the user has scripting disabled.

Alexa, on the other hand, is browser based, so that it captures data only about those users who have the Alexa Toolbar installed on their browser.

Therefore, Alexa data represent but a small and biased sample of a page's total activity.

Hello Snakeair,

I checked the details of your site on Alexa and have to say I'm impressed. Congrats on getting so far based on your hard work. I love to see success and I wish you much more.

Might I ask how long it took you to get to that ranking?

My Best,

Frank

Hello Deepsand,

While quantcast is an analytics tool, like Google Analytics and other analytics tools, it does not appear to measure against other sites that do not use it's tools. Alexa, measures all sites against each other, independently, and therefore has a global reputation for being an unbiased tool for assessing general performance of any site against all other sites. It's what news organizations and reporters use, regularly, as a reference so I think it's getting pretty widespread acceptance.

My Best,

Frank

Well the blog is little over 3 years old so it took awhile. My main thing is making sure my site don't go down do to a hosting issue or a problem on my end. That would effect the traffic and make visitors unhappy and not visit again. lol

Hi Netsearch,

Thanks for the information. Very impressive. I appreciate your hard work and wish you much more success.

Mind if I ask how many unique hits you get per day and how long it took you to get there?

My Best,

Frank

This really is impressive. Think about it... With over 25M websites in the world, you're down in the 100K range. Very few people in the world can say that. And, to top it off, you're doing it with minimal resources, not huge investments that come with large companies like Google, IBM, etc.

About how many hits per day are you getting now?

My Best,

Frank

It is not the purpose of analytics to publicly provide comparative data about different sites, but rather to privately provide specific data about one own site(s).

As for Alexa traffic data, contrary to your belief, it is quite biased, as it is available only from those who voluntarily install the Alexa toolbar, a sub-set of users that is far from being representative of the universe of users. And, as a long time and regular reader of industry publications, I very rarely see anyone quote Alexa traffic data at all, let alone as being authoritative.

I have got 132K Alexa.

I get around 800 visitors per day.

But I think it depends on the niche. More technical niche you have the more chances of your visitors coming to your site with an alexa toolbar installed on their browsers.

Thanks.

Hello Deepsand,

I believe your statement to be inaccurate. The toolbar offered by Alexa is for getting measurement details that are above the foundational measurement that Alexa performs across all sites, by default. I believe their toolbar is more like Google Analytics. You do not need to use the toolbar for Alexa to rank you. Our site does not use it, as is the case with most sites ranked by Alexa.

My Best,

Frank

Hi Lawrencia,

Thanks for the information. I think getting down into the 100K range is a tremendous achievement. Congratulations!

How long did it take you to get to that point?

My Best,

Frank

I'm aiming to get under 10k alexa ranking. It's currently over 10k, but under 11k.

Will not give my stats away, but one rule I currently use is the following.

1. Find other sites that are doing similar things to you and see what they are ranking.

2. Check each of your competitors/similar sites REACH within Alexa. Now if their overall ranking is better than yours. Take their REACH and divide that by yours then that should give you an estimate of roughly how much traffic they are getting to what you have to get to have that alexa ranking.

For example, if your site was a free online games site with a ranking of 2,000,000 and a reach of 0.00001, then take another free online games site with a ranking of 500,000. Look at their reach and it should be better than yours. Now say it's 0.00038.

That means your site 0.00001 divided by 0.00038 = 38.

That means you have to get 38 more times the traffic you are currently getting.

This is only one estimated way to work things out, but it doesn't work well on a low visited site as the more traffic, the more accurate the data when comparing against another site I would think.

Saying all this, I only look at Alexa as a bit of fun, my main interest is getting overall real traffic to my site and monetizing it, plus keeping my visitors happy and providing a valued service to them.

Hi John,

Getting in the 10K range is amazing. While I understand your not wanting to give away your stats, could you please at least share the number of daily visits you're getting, so we can correlate to Alexa ranking and so the community will have an understanding of what type of traffic they'll need to move, forward

So far, we're seeing that...

100 Visits per day is roughly a 3M ranking
200 Visits per day is roughly a 1.6M ranking
800 Visits per day is roughly a 100K ranking

There are multiple benefits for the community in understanding all of this. For example, one benefit is that it helps people develop measurement and achievement goals. Another is that we now know which forum members are being genuine or disingenuous when they post the amount of traffic they're getting (just look at other threads where people consistently claim 1K or even 10K visits per day and their Alexa rankings don't correlate). Knowing which forum posters are genuine vs. disingenuous allows us to distinguish who the most trustworthy and competent posters are, allowing people to turn to the right people for the right help.

My Best,

Frank

Nope, don't wanna even give that away as it will give an advantage to my competitors as they will know to much.

One thing I can say, I'm in the affiliate marketing niche and you don't need nowhere near as much traffic for that niche to rank well with alexa as a huge majority of the visitors have alexa installed.

What I'm trying to say is that you can have an affiliate program related site that has 20,000 pageviews a day and rank under 10k and then a free online games site that has over 100,000 pageviews a day and rank over 10k. 100,000 pageviews in free online games sites would give a worse alexa ranking than the affiliate site because less visitors would have the alexa toolbar thing installed.

So realistically you can't get the true statistics from peoples sites in differing niches via using Alexa.
