Selling ad space - just one tip

Recently I've been having lots of success selling ad space on my content sites. Here's my tip: tell your prospective ad buyer what's in it for them.

For example I just sent out an email about how I can get them deep links to their important content pages that generate traffic and help with search engines because they come from relevant content-rich pages with good PR and few other links. The links are embedded in the middle of keyword rich sentneces and come at a very good price. Buy a few and I can get you even more traffic and more link popularity at an even bigger discount.

Obviously I'd be more specific, but you get the idea. Focus on the benefits for the customer. Contrast that with You can buy a link on my site for x dollars a month. Anyone can say no to that one.

But if we tell them that they expect this number of traffic and by chance the traffic is less, out point goes wrong.

I don't say you'll get x number of uniques or anything. I tell them I'll get them traffic. The important part here is that I really do get them traffic. I'm not saying that you just make stuff up - make your sites as helpful to the advertisers as possible and then tell the advertisers what you're doing to help them. I do sell ads on some low traffic pages and pages with mostly non-US traffic and I'm up front about that.

Yeh I try not to empellish, just be honest with your advertisers... In my website (see sig) I've created a page explaining the benefits of advertising. Just be clear and don't waffle

You're welcome. It's amazing how many webmasters have no idea how to communicate. I had one guy write:

What you think about whatever the site was ? I'm waiting.

Man, that guy wanted me to work pretty hard to buy his ad space. I don't have time to elicit all the things i need to know like traffic, link placement, etc.

Just find out what the advertisers need, most advertisers need more hits or customers to earning money, then tell them why your site can help them out.

btw, you can ask your advertisers for feedback, did your site send them hits and customers, to be friendly and more advertiser would come
