adsense tips:

1. no borders
2. match site color scheme. (but its not bad to make it a little different. just test)
3. above the fold.
4. good, keyword-rich content
5. smart-placement: test, test and test.

Adding the link units has made a dramatic improvement to my CTR. Check out www.allswords.com on the lefthand side--those moved me up to appx 10%

I think it's a matter of the ads looking like site content rather than an obviously different entity all together. If readers see a google ad that matches your site nicely and the ads that pop up are realitive, they are more likely to click. But if you are on a site that is mostly blue and silver in color, talking about rocks... then why would you expect them to click on a pink banner off the the side advertising feathers?

maybe a bad analogy, but the ads just have to 'flow' with the content IMO.

Very true as you want to serve your visitors with relevant resources which brings value to them, your site and your overall payments.

Every week I try and browse through my sites to check each ad being served and see the quality of each site.

If the url is just an affiliate site or a directory or just something totally off topic I'll ban the url via the adsense ctrl panel - doing this could might remove higher payout ads but if your looking after your visitors interest and reliability of your site removing the urls shouldnâ€™t be a concern.

Also what works for me may not work for Darren or anyone else for that matter so its extremely important to test test test. My rule of thumb is when I make a change to the Adsense I will leave it on for 2-4 weeks and review its performance at the end. This way I can tell if its worth leaving the changes or it worth changing. Yeah its time consuming but I know I am in this for the long haul.

I wish you could choose your font type and size

My ads sorta look like the same as the content on my travel blog, but the font stands out from the Arial 9pt that I use.

For the blog I'm getting a few thousands visitors every week, but the CTR and Income from Adsense could be much better - but then its really more of a hobby site than income generator.

Well, I have one site with xx ctr and my tip is that you do not place ads on all pages or at least not on homepage.
Let people relaxe when they see your ads free homepage and include ads on other pages using tips above.
If you think about it who click ads on first page? They are there for your content not for ads to go along.
