Seeking help with site revenue

I own a very popular blog network and I'm hoping to get some suggestions on how to improve its revenue. The focus of the network is atheism, religion and politics. We get about 600,000 unique visitors per month and between 5 and 6 million pageviews. The traffic is very strong, but the revenue is not. We're earning about $1 cpm total, with 5 ads on the page (one 728x90 banner and four 300x250 box ads).

Ads with autoplay audio or video may pay more, but they're out of the question. And we don't have much of a chance for any kind of marketing that relies on people giving their email addresses. We've relied entirely on contextual/remnant ads to this point, but even with that the revenue seems awfully low. We have a third party company handling our ads and they are signed up with Google and many other remnant networks, using Doubleclick to maximize the rate. They only take a 10% cut, which I know is very good.

Any suggestions on how to boost the revenue under those circumstances? Do 160x600 ads get more clicks and earn more revenue than 300x250 ads? I also have an SEO evaluation that has been done, but we haven't yet implemented any of the suggested changes; does an SEO optimization really make a difference in ad revenue? Our problem isn't driving traffic, it's monetizing the large traffic we already have. Any help would be appreciated.

It's been almost a month since you've created this thread, has anything changed since then?

Have you tried changing the ad size's and colors of the ad? Some ad size's may not always work out best but been known to score big on other sites in your niche. I use 250x250 (2 blocks) 1 350x250 block and 1 468x90 block in certain section's. I have adsense channels on them and have these ad blocks targeted. http://support.google.com/adsense/bi...n&answer=32856

About the SEO thing.

Google is always making algorithm updates and it would be wise to make sure your blog is always in tip top shape as in SEO wise. If you are getting professional SEO advice or suggestions to do, do them. It might effect your traffic for a small time frame or not at all.

In fact, it might even move your rankings up 1 or 2 spots which could increase the traffic a little more. For SEO advice, it's best to start a thread in our SEO section for opinions from other SEO guru's.

Have you tried A/B type testing? With that much traffic, you should be able to test a few different ad layouts and see which yields the most results. 600,000 unique visitors is insanely impressive.

Also, do you have a way to keep people coming back every week or so, so that your pageviews will keep climbing steadily?

Hi Stcynic

Since it's a blog network, is it that a lot of your visitors are directed off to other websites? How is your bounce rate on an average?

You should join some affiliate programs to earn extra income.

Relying on ad revenue is not effective most of the time unless you have very good salespeople.

you can just depend on ads for revenue , try any affiliate network , try getting paid post. Paid posts works great for increasing revenue

Sounds like the thread creator isn't interested in this thread no more. He has not logged in since creating the thread.
