No I don't charge for guest posts. The author gets a backlink or two for his efforts, and I get fresh quality content.

Both winners in my book.

if I had a high traffic blog I will probably add guest blogging as new stream income.

I'm not sure why would anybody consider charging for guest blogging. This certainly will not work out for newer blogs with low traffic since the point of guest blogging is to attract fresh content with a new perspective at zero cost.

Even from the point of view of a high traffic blog, charging for guest post would discourage people in your niche in forming working relationships with you, which defeats the purpose of guest blogging. If one wants to discourage article spinners, one shouldn't do it at the expense of attracting people in your niche who would like to enter a working relationship with you.

Moreover, charging someone for guest blogging may potentially make you more obliged to accept the person's article, even if it may not meet your standards. Keeping it free gives you the freedom to curate and accept posts that you feel are appropriate for your blog.

I've been affiliated with a site (sort of a co-owner so to speak) that did....

And was able to get around $150 for a guest post....

The site was also only ranked around 429K on Alexa at the very highest...

With around 30K unique visitors a month.

Also, it's not all about the backlink if you are selective about who you post for.

We have a couple of client sites that we host guest blogs - we do not charge as the articles are perfect for SEO and are unique (we make sure by running them through copyscape on a regular basis).

Guest blogs will give you:
free content
free backlinks (poster usually links to his post)
free authority (more quality content = more authority)

I would prefer to be much more picky about what content I post on my blog rather than charge money for it.

If you don't charge more people like to share guest posts on your blog and this way your blog can update regularly. Now its your choice to charge or not. But i don't charge.

I don't charge for the guest posts because we all know that content is the king and instead they the backlink. If anyone writes the high quality for your blog or website then absolutely it will attract more traffic to your site as well. On the other, the author will get some benefits from the article posted.
