Not really a "money making" idea

I currently have a site offering "widget" design services which has been running for a few years and is now fairly well established.

What I am now thinking of doing is creating a new site dedicated purely to "widget" design ADVICE rather than selling a service. Then, this site will link to my current site should someone want help (I hope that makes sense).

Is this OK to do? Would this be frowned upon by Google if both sites are registered in my name?

Sorry if these quesations are stupid - I just want to be sure before I go ahead and do this! Thanks in advance for any advice...

Nope good idea.

Complimentry sites are a great idea and I have a TON of 4x4 related sites of mine linking to each other... Make sure not to do a lot of inner linking more of a hub type linking style I guess. With only 1 other site you should be fine though

Thanks, Todd; sorry to sound thick but what is the difference between "hub type" linking and "inner" linking?

A lot of inner linking would be linking all the sites to each other and back and forth.

A hub type would be using 1 of the "main sites" that has the most PR and spreading it around to your "new sites". This way you use the most powerful site to jumpstart the other sites... that atleast works for me.

You could link site A to B C D E but I wouldn't link site B to C D E as wel then.. that may lok lik ea link farm.

Oh, i see. With just one other site I should be ok then? My plan was to have a couple of links from my current site to the new one, and then have a couple of banners to my current site from the new one (on relevant pages - not every page).

you could also try a mininet type linking strategy using a few more related sites they tend to do quite well..

also, with the new site, will it be OK for me to put adsense on it, using the same account I use for my current site?

it's probably easier if you do a search for mininet you'll see some pictures on google it's a "butterfly" shaped linking system with your main site as the body
