Need Advice on a Music Site
I have a friend of mine that wanted to try a website and I agreed to help. Right now I am building links for his site and all. I am a little unsure on which way I can go to build revenue on this site without using adsense. I figured I would ask you guys and see if I can get this going in a good direction for him. He runs a music site for new dj's and I think it's a great idea. Any help would be appreciated.

It is a good idea and I like the site... sorry I can't be of much help to help you to decide how to make money off of this site. I never understood this aspect.. oh well. Are you making any money off it right now?

No money right now. I am trying to teach him what I know about SEO and everything else. I know there is a way to bring this site to the next level...I am just not knowledgeable on how. He is stuck on the idea of adsense...but I am not. Thanks for your reply though.

Are you leaning more towards a subscription service.. or do you have any ideas of where you might want to go with it?

Well I was thinking either a subscription type service once membership and traffic raises and possibly having some sort of way to have the dj have the ability to sell their music on the site. The second is a little tougher as I am not sure of what to use for the selling of different people other than the x-cart pro.

Ya the second is a little tougher as I have never had to do that before.. so could offer no advice. As far as subscription that was the only thing I could think of. You could possibly do affilate stuff.. like selling mainstream DJ's cds through like amazon or something... I think they do a kickback program.

why dont you have your friends music for free download..atleast a sample.. and then a link for the visitors to buy.. make it a digital download or send them a CD if they order the whole album.. as your friend to wear a t-shirt of his website when he performs...make sure its neon or shiney t-shirt so people can see it in the dark.. there are so many thing which you can do to start bring in cash!

Thanks funguru! Those are other great alternatives. However most is not his music. Many Dj's post their music for review so I wonder what kind of software could I use to track all the different songs sold. I am working on T-Shirts right now for this site.

All you need is a good database written. So once you sell a song or album you can give the kickback to the DJ, of course with your percentage taken out. I don't know if we have any resident programmers. I am a webdesigner by trade and I contract a very specific programmer anytime I need that kind of work done.

You could look for music related affiliate programs through affiliate directories like ClickBank and Commission Junction.
Music affiliate programs are a welcome change from all the "make money fast" advertising.

Isla I am also a web designer and not by a long shot a programmer. I need to learn a little bit more about that stuff I guess. I am going to research the affiliate programs this evening as well. I think there are lots of great ideas here. Thanks everyone!

I dont know how you feel about popunders, but 1 or 2 well placed popunders could generate some extra revenue.

through cj.com you can hook up with Rhapsody which pays out $15/conversion. Adsense has a horrible payout on music sites. The words just aren't that competitive. Amazon.com affiliates pays ok (well only like 4-6%) but it's major upside is the fact that it is a trusted brand and has a good conversion. IMO.
With music sites though, in all honesty, I think the money is in advertising sold. If his site is generating traffic, I think selling text links and banner ads is where the money is. It's not as easy as just slapping some adsense up, but it pays better.
