well that depends on what you mean by a lot of money. 2 months ago i started a content site and i make about $15 a day off that site from ads. it took me 1 1/2 weeks to build and requires basically no upkeep.
i could do this over and over with different kinds of sites and pull in $100/day. now that won't pay the bills, but for a teenager its some good spending cash.

The forum makes a decent amount of income for us, too. And, I'm sure some sites make tens of thousands per month in ad revenue. I'm just saying it's not the norm. A lot of people start sites with the ad revenue model in mind, and the money never materializes.

I think there is a lot of money to be made in Advertising - but yes it can get iffy...

I am not much of web designer but I put a basic website that was just an advertising directory (all affiliate links) - it made me some money and still is but it's getting stale

I have not bothered to tidy it up since August and now there are too many broken links and I'm having a rethink.

I have an idea I'd like to share. About 2 years ago I was hired to design a web site for a spa in North Carolina that needed several reservation forms set up for client bookings. It was my job to get the site placed in travel directories and indexed on Google. The spa pulled in roughly 25,000.00 in 6 months in Internet reservations. That got me thinking.

The vacation and travel market appears to be a good market to target. Most people use the Internet to search for vacations and travel related activities. There are so many places to promote too... it just helps to know what people are looking for. Enter the overture search suggestion tool.

I grabbed a bunch of keyword sensitive domain names to corner a segment of the vacation market for North Carolina. I'm basically doing what I did for the spa but taking it to the next level using a very aggressive marketing approach based on keyword popularity. The keywords I chose for the domain names where based on statistics here:

The business plan is pretty straight forward. First I present the websites and the back end technology to various business owners (bed and breakfasts, spa professionals, etc.) then negotiate a percentage cut of every booking I bring in. I'm up to 10% with several businesses already. A plan similar to this could be used for many other vacation activities in many other parts of the world.... so many places... so little time

Online auctions are a GREAT source for generating income, what alot of people don't realise is that they can also drive alot of traffic from an auction to your own site. I practice this principle everyday. Try it you might enjoy it.
