Adsense - Pays only for clicks, not for Impressions?

I am not very experienced with adsense. Does adsense pay only for clicks? Not for Impressions? I know they charge advertisers on a CPM basis, but I don't think they pay publishers for impressions. Am I right?

google pays for impressions. 1000 impressions equals a click.

Well, they do pay for impressions but it really sucks (1000 -> $0.01). For me at least.

Does anyone know if it's possible to get more CPM then CPC ads? Like trying to go for image ads instead of text. Does that give a better chance of getting CPM?
I'm launching a browser game together with some friends next month and the number of pageviews per player will be pretty big, so the click rate will be annoyingly low probably. Trying to figure out if CPM can bring in more cash then CPC

Perhaps, Google does some traffic quality analysis and automatically decides which AD to send .....???
