W/Out ads 10000000's of the free-to-end-user informational sites would NOT exist. Sure I can understand paying for sites (I do), but having to pay to access ALL the 100+ sites I use is just stupid.

You are probably not a full time student or academic. It seems they tend to be the one's advocating that we give them free content without any third party compensation. We subisdize universities and then they charge us $80,000 to $200,000 for a degree so why shouldn't they expect us to educate them for free.

We might loose 10000000 free to end user sites, but we would loose 80000000 made for add sense sites, and spam sites, BS seo sites, opt in email sites, dumb blog sites and all the sites people have put up for the not so subtle reason of making $ from adds.

There is a reason that people pay extra for HBO, its not full of s$%t, and i personally would prefer if it cost 4x as much to get on the net and that 3/4 of that money was used to develop a decent spam/mfa bot that will search the net and remove pages that are useless from the potential pages you can visit.

Edit: and poor people shoulnt be using the net anyways, they should be out looking for a job so price shouldnt be an issue LOL

I agree with you on some of this, but the last part might be a bit extreme even in joking. Some people who are considered poor do work very hard to make the living they have. They simply do not always get the same breaks or luck as others.

And I tend to disagree - ads ARE obstrusive regardless of size, position, and window, they take up space that could be used for valid content.

I'd rather pay for a service (ie. Flickr pro account, YPP game subscription) than support a site that makes profit solely off ads. Look at wikipedia - they ask for donations and get them because it's a worthwhile site. If only donation sites took the place of all advertised-laden sites, I have a feeling that the survival of the fittest, and best sites would exercise itself.

Wishful thinking, I realize.
Sites that are living from subscriptions will have some difficulties to survive (see the example of the online dating industry affected by the success of the plentyoffish website). If we will remove the ads from the rest of the websites we will end up with a great Internet experience ... but without any website
