I kind of expect ads on the pages I visit - how else is the site owner supposed to earn for his efforts? Sort of an even exchange for useful free information.
I hate it when people complain about ads on web pages... as if someone has time to research, write, and post information full time just for the sheer joy of it. Most of the ads do are not even obtrusive.

Cheers for the triumph of adblock. No regrets.
And I tend to disagree - ads ARE obstrusive regardless of size, position, and window, they take up space that could be used for valid content.
I'd rather pay for a service (ie. Flickr pro account, YPP game subscription) than support a site that makes profit solely off ads. Look at wikipedia - they ask for donations and get them because it's a worthwhile site. If only donation sites took the place of all advertised-laden sites, I have a feeling that the survival of the fittest, and best sites would exercise itself.
Wishful thinking, I realize.

Popup ads and more than 2 contextual ads are really annoying.
chicgeek, you pay membership fees for 2-3 sites what if you have 20 registrations how can you afford so much money per month ?

Someone else will support the site, if it's worth their time.

I don't think every site can follow wikipedia route and rely on donations. Ads may be obstrusive, but without ADs, hardly 1000 general purpose web sites would have been created in Internet.

People click on ads fro a reason. Usually it means they are looking for a product that the site has info on. Why is this considered bad?

I think the blockers should be optionally disabled for some sites because if someone is making efforts to pick a topic and write content and for his/her blog he/she should be compensated for that.
Pop ups and pop unders must be 10 000 000% blocked that's for sure.

You are right popups and popunders are extremely annoying. As for normal ads well then many quality sites would not be around today without them. Most people tend to ignore them anyways unless they are looking for something. I like the idea of a paid registration for a quality site, but most people would simply go somewhere else. One way to solve this of course would be to offer a site version for paid members with no ads and another for the ad supported members. If it is a site I use often believe the money worth it I would pay for a non-ad based version. As was said earlier sites have to pay their expenses as well. Many people do have their sites for enjoyment, but would like to defer their costs if possible.

I would do this myself as well if I had such a site. Look at pogo and the people that pay them $40 to $45 per year to play with no ads and special perks. A popular forum or site with a large number of members could potentially make a decent amount of money doing this and still provide quality content.

Has any one come up with an ad blocker blocker? It might be nice to have a script sense ad blocker and if the ads are blocked send them to a subscription page with the option to turn off the ad blocker an return to an ad supported page.
I am am amazed at how teenagers and twenty-somethings (and a few older people) have no trouble stealing ... I mean borrowing songs purchased for a single user. I've also seen twenty somethings copying DVDs at work including printing out stick on labels. The same youngsters think their underpaid making $60k to $90k, movies, music, software, and web content should be free, why shouldn't their work be free?

yes, I found one solution from internet and fixed it up a little.
By the way I use it for some of my sites and on blogger.com too
It is a simple JavaScript check but it is very useful.
If you need some info drop me a pm and I'll send you the JS code.

It's easy, just find a beautiful girl with a text "Some Ad Blockers are Evil" on her T-shirt.
it will have a huge effect
