I don't think "sad" is the correct term. Maybe "stupid" or "stubborn" are the proper terms.

Huge sites are huge because they focus on user experience and trust instead of making money

I've seen interviews with the founders of both websites. They're both anti-capitalists if you ask me. I believe the Whales guy (wiki) denies it. But Craigslist founder openly admits it.

At one point there was a rumor, or perhaps it was true (don't remember) that google wanted to buy wikipedia, and were turned down. So they're starting their own from scratch. The excuse Whales gave was that wikipedia didn't own any of the content so basicly had nothing to sell. Whether or not that is an issue I don't know. It doesn't seem to be an issue with other user contributed sites being sold.

Most "smart" businesses start of their website as free and then make their money after they get enough people on there. Craigslist could make a fortune if they charged people $5 per listing in certain categories and maybe more in others. This would almost entirely eliminate spam since the spammers have to pay for it. And they should also have a rule that if you're ad gets flagged for spamming you don't get your money back.

I believe Craigslist sends inline affiliate offers in the emails you get when you confirm your listings. So, I'm sure they make a fair amount there.

Personally I hope CL never changes. I think it's an AWESOME media that really works. I've done so many things with CL lately, and I tell everyone about it. I love the fact that it's free and simple and stuff is cheap. It's hopefully the wave of the future.

With no disrespect intended towards anyone who has posted, I realize it may be hard for you to believe but not everything in this world is motivated by the pursuit of money. After a certain point money is nothing more than the score counter on a video game.
