something i think would be neat is to look at various sites, say once a day or once a week.
You can pick sites that are cutting edge, working for some sort of change, or just overall good quality sites with a good message.
That is what I would do at least.

I don`t agree with this adsense advice. Just building a site to display adsense is not a long term idea. I know many people are just doing that.
And domain name is quiet good. You should open a web services compnay or partner with someone. But we awards or cool websites is also a nice suggestions.
But if you ask me I believe in creating my own work, rather than displaying others.

some kind of exploration site...make it unique, like 'draw' a web in virtual/3d graphics and allow people to 'walk' around the web, kind of like an interactive gaming site, like these php driven sites you know. and in some parts of the web you meet creatures or stockbrokers who try and kill you etc. earn stats and stuff as you find things, like an interactive roleplaying game using either a pun on the word web or actually basing it on the internet web and breaking the scenario down into circuit boards and urls that are perilious thin lines or something...just dont do the normal..aroundtheweb could be a cool internet game...you could also base the game on earning 'points' to spend at your sponsors' sites etc. liek a loyalty card scheme...instead of stats, get enough interest in the game, then you can surely sell the fact that you can provide your users with bonus codes to spend at say amazon or other online retailers (even your own sites)
just an idea anyway

After much thought and debate. I have made AroundtheWeb.com a Web Directory.
I like many of your ideas but determined that a directory would brand well with the name AroundTheWeb.com
Here is a post in the offer services forum of the site about my new directory.

Yeah, I was going to suggest a directory. To give your site some credibility, though, you really need to add some listings, even if they are just sites of your own, or sites that you add. At the moment, there isn't a single listing!
BTW, what software are you using?

Directory
I would start with free listings until you've build up.
I am running the same script for Business Directory and SME Directory
They are growing quickly now, but I am not sure I would have got them off the ground if I had started with paid submissions.

I found it on Hostscripts.com in the php link index section. Over a year ago. I've been using my modified version over time.
I think you can get it from biz-directory.org

Just wondering...
wont it be better if you ask the people submitting their links to link to your website as well?

I'm working on the backlinks to AroundTheWeb.com in a different marketing campain.
For this directory I don't want to manage link exchanges with other sites with the site that would be a nightmare in addition managing submissions who are paying for the directory submission.
I have a directory that I am building for link exchanges
But if anyone wants to link to the directory they are free to do so
