Thumbs up Review: vareside.com

Hi v7n folks,

I've opened a website project a while ago and I'd like to know what you think about it.

http://www.vareside.com/

Vareside is a free, multi-lingual, customizable website that is ment to be an alternative to myfav.es, netvibes, Pageflakes etc, as I and many others find some of these sites very crowded and over-loaded. Vareside is the exceptional attempt of creating a browser startpage that uniquely unites design and functionality.

I hope you like it, or if you don't, you can tell me what to improve. Thank you very much.

You need to put some content before we can say anything.

@Siemen: You are right. As the "Welcome" text says, you first should click on the edit settings link to see everything Vareside has to offer. Thank you very much for setting vareside.com as your startpage.

@keith115: For all of those who don't have a clue what it is about, we have the "Welcome" text. As this is not enough, obviously, I need something more eye-catching. As far as I understand the first big thing to do is convincing the user not to leave by telling him/her what Vareside is about. Do you think something like Netvibes does for a startup would be the best? A page which tells the user in the center of the page in short with a few examples or a video what they can/can't do? Paid Google search won't work that easily as this would require permission from Google because here, under the German law, this would mean that Vareside is a busines - but it's not, it's a private non-commercial project.

This is really beautiful. Perhaps start with a bit of sample content and links (twitter etc) to get people started

Pretty neat, beautiful.
I had loading speed problems thou (China)

It looked great in full view.

Too bad about the loading time, otherwise I'd use it for my front page

@Quotes Papa: Thank you for telling me about the loading time issues from China. I'm trying to reduce the loading time as much as possible to make my website attractive to be used from every location. Thanks again for liking my project.

Not sure if it's because half the stab went for dinner or something you did, but now it loads faster.

I've made it my front page for now and we'll see how that works. U got yourself a customer

Looks good but I believe you should add more content on first landing page..else people will be lost..or you can make settings more prominent.

Hey there.

Funny layout, less content.

Well on to my review:

It seems you are using HTML5 doctype.

Validator tells me 25 erros.

The main failure is this tag :

Code:
<body onload="">
Remove the onload="" because I think bots will not go beyond this tag. Even Validtor stopped and told me:

Line 1, Column 1455: Cannot recover after last error. Any further errors will be ignored.

The order of your meta tags seem to be wrong too.

Check here for those 25 errors:

http://validator.w3.org/check?uri=ht...Inline&group=0

You have 2 times <style type="text/css"></stlye> in your head, combine them.

Google Page Speed Score is 89. No wonder because you have not much content.

Tables are styled with inline CSS... hm, not my style. I would go tableless where it is possible.

Another thing is: put all inline JS into an external file.

Michael

What edits would you suggest the thread creator to make?

Seems your review was a little on the low quality side to me. http://www.v7n.com/forums/website-re...ty-review.html
