Review: personalised-signs.co.uk

Hi guys
I've put another thread on because for some reason it wouldn't let me post my website link so here goes.
I have just built this website recently - I'm useless with computer's so it really is a first, novice attempt but all reviews would be appreciated.

Visually, it looks nice and clean. Good job.

SEO wise:
-category pages need more meat! By meat I mean content as in words. A proper introduction instead of a paragraph listing what is included in the section.

-Links need their title attribute filled in. The title attribute appears when someone mouses over the link. It lets them know where they are going if clicked and if the title of the page they are going to be taken to is included there a SEO advantage.

-Image alt attribute (incorrectly called alt tag by some) is missing from the category items images in the center of the page. The image alt attribute will show if the person is surfing with images turned off or the image is missing. The text you put in the image alt attribute should describe the image. Within the description you can use a keyword or two but don't keyword stuff. Some ecommerce software packages use the image name which isn't so great. The newer ones that have cottoned on to SEO will let you put your own image alt attribute in for each product.

-Heading tags: in the center of your category pages, the item names are in heading tags but the breadcrumbs at the top are using a heading tag to force formatting of the links instead of giving a proper structured document. The outside blocks of your design is not using heading tags to define the blocks of information.

-Meta tags: I looked at 2 category pages source code. Both are using the exact same meta keywords and meta description tags. Not good. Either this is the software's fault because it won't let you do individual tags for each page or you didn't know better and use the same ones for all the pages. Keywords are not used by Google and Bing (but that doesn't mean every bot does not use them). The description is shown in your search result if the search engine thinks it suits the person's search. Writing individual good description tags for each page will give you a better chance of what you wrote being shown (but no guarantee).

-With WWW vs without WWW versions: I can access your site with and without putting the www in the front of your domain name. That means the search engines can too! Having both versions available creates a duplicate content issue which is not good. Pick one version to promote. Make sure all your internal links use that version in the coding of the links. Use the .htaccess file of your site to place a 301 permanent redirect instruction for the search engines to use. This not only solves the duplicate content problem, if someone links to you with the wrong version you don't get your incoming links spread out over versions. Everyone is forced to use the same version when visiting the site.

-Social media buttons: Your pages are missing social media buttons. Having the Like buttons, Tweet Me button and share buttons will get people to mention you on social networking sites which in turn provides social proof to those who visit the page and is a signal (amongst lots of others) to the search engines this page is good.

That's it for now!

I think your color scheme could use more work, as the olive green and browns are not very cheerfull. Also the olive green accents don't go with the horizontal brown wood background tile and the horizontal background conflicts with the wood grain of the background under the product pictures with the wood grain going in all directions. You might consider using the same wood grain under the pictures as the background under the whole page or else I'd suggest finding something else that is more compatible with olive green. There are several color scheme tools on the internet that will help. ColorWiz is a good one.

Also if you're going to be using wood grain for a background on all your products you might set up an area in your home where the light source never changes and the wood grain always goes in the same direction as every picture's background is different and has a light reflection on most of them. If that's not possible then take the pictures with a plain white paper for the background with the same light source on all of them. Or crop each item and paste on a white background.

I hope that helps.

To be honest I am extremely impressed with your site.

I think the Navbar on a website is very important, since it can keep viewers on your website longer. With that being said, your Navbar looks great, it is very descriptive and makes traveling from page to page of your site a breeze.

I do think that you could spice up your header logo a little bit. It's very bare and really doesn't have much to it.

The layout is good. I like how you have your main body inbetween the two smaller columns. It makes everything very easy to read.

If you change your header logo I think it would make a big difference! But everything looks great!

Losslessly compressing could save 1.4KiB (26% reduction).
Losslessly compressing google_sidecol_trans.png could save 923B (3% reduction).

Losslessly compressing t_1874162.jpg could save 261B (12% reducti).

I see you've already implemented the social buttons HtmlBasicTutor suggested. Page looks pretty clean and simple, the suggestions given already cover anything onsite.

I clicked on the link to go to your Facebook page and it took me to the "pagemodo" thing. I'd have taken it straight to your timeline. Just my 2 cents.

It goes here: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Perso...06171216118819
I'd take it here: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Perso...73852022629166

That puts you closer to the shopping button and allows then to see updates. I dont see a purpose of the pagemodo page.

DISCLAIMER: I'm not an expert on social media, and I have no knowledge of pagemodo, so if I'm out of line, I trust someone will say why I'm wrong.

Very well done indeed, especially for first website.
All the points regarding "seo wise" made by htmlbasictutor is important for your website. They should be implemented asap, and also with your image alt tags Do NOT have two double quotes. Reducing images sizes is great method for more efficient user experience.

Your left hand menu can be optimized a little better, meaning, figure out your best performing products, and have different color in text so they stand out. You can do this with featured products menu background color as well. Make it reddish or yellowish.

Suggestions pertaining to your blog: The text requires attention, as it is in bold face, and also have padding around images so the user can focus on one thing while reading. Also, should have a call to action at the end of your blog posts. Direct readers to what you want them to do etc.

Within your products pages, you have a link to a form "recommend this to a friend" I would not actually have this, as it depletes the purpose of user guidance, since just above this link, you want your users to perform an action, thus, this link at that time is like a distraction.

Web copy-writing suggestions: All your product pages are very well and inform the user of what the product is. You could also put the user in to a frame of mind by incorporating words, such as "Imagine the smile on your face because you'll never forget your "Me Time" --
I know that is just an example and perhaps sounds lame (it is intended for you to consider framing of mind, that's all)
I hope these are helpful points and will be considered by you.
Keep at it, because soon, you will be rewarded highly, and also remember, successful website projects are those who always make improvements.

I really like it! It has a nice, clean feel to it and it is a breeze to browse! It is very user-friendly and a consistent navigation make your site great!

The only thing that could use a bit more tweaking is your "alt attributes" as they can be a bit more descriptive, which in turn will help your rankings!

Wonderful job!
