shame i'm not graphically inclined

funny you should mention it, there's an article in these forums about that =P
"Firstly, and perhaps rather surprisingly, the studies have shown that online readers are attracted to text before graphical content. The reverse is true for readers of newspapers and magazines.
Of users’ first eye-fixations upon a Web page, 78% were upon text rather than graphics."
makes me feel all gooey inside =)

I don't like the calendar since it's just floating there in between the header and the messages.

yeah that's a surprise indeed, studies like that often have questions that are very skewed ya know ....but hey both are sort of like kissing cousins...you can't go very far without them both ya know....in the end though every rule can be broken and success can be achieved with anything if you try hard enough

yeah, if i could give 1 tip it would be to remove the calendar (either completely or moved off to the side/bottom). when i open the page i have to scroll down to see content. this is a no-no when it comes to usability. other than that, looks good for a beginning web designer. much better than my first site.

the images (link) on the right show up as [AD-IMAGE], i think it is just the dir named banners ( www.foohonpie.com/banners/thegpf.gif), try to change it, a lot of people set the browers to exclude ad images or install a pop-up/ad blocker

If i were you i would do something, anything with your banner at the top. Then i would take out the calendar you have centered right in the middle of the page. Chances are i'm not looking at your site to see what day of the week it is. Then take the counter out of the upper right hand corner of the page, its nice to know how many people are going to your site, but you don't want it to be one of the main focuses. Last i would change the color scheme, the colors you use are fine, but you should use them in a more eye pleasing way, maybe make the links black or something, anyways thats just what i think.

understandable, but the purpose of the calender is to see what days have entries and what days don't, not just a calender for the sake of keeping time
@Ricool
thanks, i'll go ahead and fix that

Alright, I've moved the calendar from on the very top to under the links section on the left column.
I'll keep the calendar on top for past months' archives however, but I think that's fine because it's not the first page a visitor would see.
On a side note, I'm thinking it would be better if I anchored the left and right columns so resizing the window won't make you lose the right one like it does now.
Any comments on the new changes?

Oh, now that's looking better. You just need to get everything to flow together now.

Yeah, the text navigation doesn't quite fit with the calenders now... it might be time to go with buttons soon.

Not only the text, but the header flowing with the left and right bars.

Nah, really, the whole page in general. I think it is too box-ey. My personal opinion, of course.
