I don't even think it has to be that extreme. I think most of your time should be spent, like you said, making it clear what the site is about at first glance. Categories would be nice too. I don't know how much you know about blogs, but I see this as a very blog-like site. Organizing blog entries by category is a useful feature, and one you should consider for your next revision.
Your site is definitely unique, and has a very original style and personality. Play off that as much you can. But don't focus so much on bodybuilding, unless you want this to be a bodybuilding site!
You might also want to consider moving to a blog format. Check out movabletype.org for more info. It has a built-in SQL backend and web-based control panel where you can add/delete entries. I once completely customized an installation to meet my design needs, so it's do-able for a design-conscience person like yourself.
