I think you are right. The designer was so offended by my opinion that am sure the review was not posted to get criticisms.

Well thats what a review is, to get critisized and change your site so other people like it. It doesn't matter if the owner likes it, it matters if people like it because if people dont like it, then they won't get hits. So he shouldn't be mad, he should take advice, good or bad, and make those changes to make his site nice.

But sometimes a person just wants to show his/her site off and receive praise - because s/he thinks it's good. So it's a bit of a blow/shock when people tell the truth about the site. Of course, we don't know who is looking for praise and who genuinely wants opinions - until it's too late.

Yah thats true. But people always put, what do you think of my site? I've never heard anyone say how good is my site or something like that. So it can go either way. The person posting just has to say what they are looking for.

Years ago I had 2 friends who were dating each other. The lad was a hobbyist oil painter, and I did a bit of oil painting myself. One evening we were all together in the lad's home, and there were other members of his family too. The girl and I were talking quietly in corner where we could see one of the lad's paintings (bored yet?). She quietly asked me what I thought of it and, because there were some major flaws in it, I said "it's alright".
She raised her voice so that everyone could hear and questioned my judgement about the painting. I was embarrassed, of course. She'd asked me what I thought of the painting, but what she really wanted was some praise for her boyfriend. I'm sure that some people ask for site reviews for the same reason - except it's not for a boyfriend
Ever since then, I've never asked what someone thinks of something of mine unless I accept any response they care to give.
Now yer bored, so I'll p**s off.

As long as you're really being honest with the designer, and yourself, you've done your best, and that's all that matters. I think genuine honesty, is the key .... there is no right or wrong. .. : )

I am not always honest, I sometimes pack my opinion in a cloth, (or two). The truth can hurt, and people can be sensitive. Directness is not always good. You accomplish usually more when you are friendly then when you are "honest". Sometimes its also good to question your own motives when commenting on other work.

Gede,
I sometimes have to beg for an honest opinion. I think honesty is always best in reviews. I mean, if a site looks like junk, does it help them to say "Oh, looks fine!"?
Just my here. I could be wrong.

I think that in this case (website review), and pardon the cliche, honesty is the best policy. .. : )

I don't say you should lie. But there is a difference between saying
He guy, your site sucks, This is wrong that is wrong etc, Read here for web design guidelines.
or
Interesting subject. Maybe you can try this to improve your site even more.
But if you know the guy or think he can have it, yes, then just supply a link

A thread of completely honest opinions about my site, would be like gold to me ... be they positive, negative or inbetween, and the factor that would make them "gold", can only be the honesty. Most people automatically detect a "level" of sincerity, in other people's statements, especially a series of them, and their sincerity meter, is usually pretty accurate. So even if I was hurt or didn't agree with their opinion, but dected a high level of sincerity/honesty, their opinion, be it good bad or indifferent, would be valuable to me, and a collection of opinions from people like that, would be "in"valuable to me. My point here I guess is that, I believe total honesty and sincerity to be a real key, in making this forum, or any website review forum, as useful as it can be. ... : )
